After s which black women typilly appeared movi as maids, Grier broke the mold pletely. In films such as “<a href=">Coffy</a>” and “<a href=">Foxy Brown</a>,” she played empowered hero who fought back agast dg alers and pimps—while often wdg up outrageo <a href=">tfights</a>. (The movi were, after all, ma by men.)</p><p class="paywall">One of her fans was Quent Taranto, who two s later gave Grier the role of a lifetime, “<a href=">Jackie Brown</a>,” as a flight attendant who gets ught up a smugglg heist. Sce then, Grier has appeared the Showtime seri “The L Word” and released an tobgraphy, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Foxy: My Life Three Acts</a>,” which is now beg veloped as a b-pic. In the book, she revealed a history of sexual asslt, startg at age six, when she was raped by a group of olr boys. The cint left her eply srred, and she was never que fortable beg the sex symbol that Hollywood wanted her to be. After a ncer sre the late eighti, she bought a small ranch Colorado, om which she mut to Los Angel when there’s work.</p><p class="paywall">I met Grier on the set of the ABC s “<a href=">Bls This Ms</a>,” -created by and starrg Lake Bell, about a cy uple who relote to a farm Nebraska. Grier plays Constance, the owner of the lol general store and the town’s sheriff. She looked the part: black wboy hat, a ged er-hi jacket, turquoise jewelry. We were the mountas of Santa Clara, California, on a Hollywood versn of Ma Street, U.S.A., led wh tractors and bal of hay. “It remds me of my fay way back, Wyomg,” Grier said, stg by the wdow her character’s store. As we spoke, there was ltle trace of Foxy Brown. At seventy, Grier has relaxed to the simple untry life she has always craved, though her life story—pecially the seventi portn—is ltered wh md-bogglg tal. In the urse of two hours, she spoke an ebullient stream of nscns, driftg om her prent to her past and then back aga. Our nversatn has been eded and nnsed.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>When you’re not this Hollywood versn of a ral town, you live on a ranch Colorado. What is your day-to-day life like?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I’m up at three or four, before the sun up. I get my ffee and all the dogs, and we go down to the barn and check on the hors. I kiss them and hug them. Bee I’m a ncer survivor, I say, “If you wake up breathg, you’re gog to have a good day.” Then I go back up, check the fenc. All the animals eat first, before I do: here’s your gra, here’s your hay. We’re so glad to see each other for twenty-some years. That’s longer than my relatnships!</p><p class="paywall"><strong>What’s the town lled?</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">It’s not a town; ’s an unrporated area, an tersectn really. I know when they’re hibernatg, and I know when they’re pregnant. I know when the fns are born. They e really close to me, bee they know I won’t harm them, and my dogs are tght not to be aggrsive. There are bears and mounta lns and yot and bobts, but we rpect each other’s habat.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Is te that Snoop Dogg has vised you on the ranch?</strong></p><p class="paywall">They had a ncert—him and Xzib and Dr. Dre and the whole crew—so I said, “Come on out for breakfast!” They me out a van, about twelve or fifteen of them. My ranch hoe is a small brick hoe. It’s nspicuo, so they drove by. They turned around and said, “We thought that was the help’s hoe.” I said, “<em>I’m</em> the help!” They expected, you know, Pam Grier’s ten-thoand-square-foot hoe, wh wall-to-wall rpetg. No. I have hard wood, bee I have animals. Easy cleanup.</p><p class="paywall">So they opened up the door and the smoke billowed out. It h my mom the face. She said, “Oh, that smells spicy.” They all had the munchi later on, and they ate about a thoand eggs and fifty gallons of orange juice.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Why did you origally move out there?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I’ve always been out there. As a child, I’d gone up to my grandfather’s property Wyomg, where everybody was attuned to the elements and to the earth. That’s how I was raised. And then n be stripped away when you move to the cy, bee everythg’s given to you. You go to the store for everythg. My equilibrium pends on me gog home to a quiet place.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>Why did you first e to Hollywood, and what was like 1970?</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Another pla. I was puttg myself through school, at Metropolan State Universy, up Denver, and at the same time was the women’s movement, wh Gloria Steem and Bella Abzug and Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan. So I need to do what I wanted to do. I said to my psychology profsor, “I like televisn. I like movi. I don’t know what that’s lled.” He said, “That’s film school.”</p><p class="paywall">So I went to California to try to get to U.C.L.A., and stayed wh relativ who had a garage that I uld sleep . I was on ary bas all my childhood, so to e out to California and drive down Sunset Boulevard—I went to shock. I didn’t know where I was. And I met some film stunts who were loadg up a van wh bl and meras. I had on a plaid shirt and probably the same Timberland boots that I have on now, wh my Ao. That’s not the appearance most people were acctomed to seeg. I said, “I’m here tryg to get to film school.” And they said, “Well, why don’t you jo , see if you like ?” They were so clive. I wasn’t “black.” My heart is beatg, bee I feel the same thg my heart that I did then, watchg them. I said, “Oh, my gosh, this is what I want to do.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>And then sudnly you’re the Philipp, starrg women--prison movi for Roger Corman.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I said, “Roger, I’m leavg three jobs, and I want to get to film school, and you want to hire me? I don’t know anythg about actg. I don’t want to leave the jobs and have you fire me.” But a sense, he was sponsorg me to learn whatever I uld. I did my own makp. I read Stanislavski, and that was my bible. And that’s how I learned what an actor do.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You have a le your book that terted me. You were dog “<a href=">The Big Doll Hoe</a>,” which was your first big role a movie—</strong></p><p class="paywall">Whout a bra!</p><p class="paywall"><strong>—and you wre, “Jack Hill”—the director—“had told me that I need to reach to my gut, not my md, to fd the real emotn. I tapped to my tensy and Roger was thrilled that I uld brg so much anic tratn and anger to my performance.” You had scribed yourself as a shy kid who was most fortable around hors. That was the nature of the beast back the fifti and sixti.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">I jt thought, How do I procs all of this? I didn’t go to school, I had nothg to fall back on—if I uld jt be a good storyteller! I said, “Roger, I want to see what you do, so if I don’t make ont I’ll have a posn behd. Bee I’m not the prettit. I’m taller than half the guys.” And I gaed weight so I uld do more edy. It’s really tertg when you have weight. People react differently than when I’m a size 4, when everyone’s droolg the elevator and I’m gog, “<em>Get off of me</em>.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>In your book, you wrote about the really horrible cints of rape, startg when you were six, when you were asslted by some olr neighborhood boys—</strong></p><p class="paywall">And you know what? They thought I was pretty, and I wasn’t. I didn’t thk I was pretty, and they were attackg me. At six years old, at eighteen, and twenty. Or they thought I was so homely that I wouldn’t say anythg, and that I would accept the victimizatn, which many women did.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>And your experience wh sexual asslt as a young person ma you velop a post-trmatic stutter.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I still have .</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You say you beme whdrawn, feelg like beg pretty, beg sexy was—</strong></p><p class="paywall">A mag for beg attacked.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Right. So how did you break out of that and—</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">I <em>didn’t</em>.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>—bee this nfint, sexy prence onscreen?</strong></p><p class="paywall">To you and to everyone else. But I didn’t fd myself sexy or pretty. I didn’t even shave my legs. To this day, I don’t thk of myself as a Nile Kidman or an Angela Bassett. I remember Steven Spielberg, when I was ttg for “The Color Purple,” he said, “Pam, never get your teeth fixed, bee that gap your teeth is jt betiful.” And I wanted to wre him and say, “Steven, ten more producers told me I should get my teeth fixed. What the heck?” It’s different wh each role. There are some rol I n play wh a gap my teeth, and other rol I’ve got to look like Angela Bassett.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Can I ask you about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whom you dated the early seventi? This was before you were famo, and he was nvertg to Islam and wanted you to be his wife. So you had to choose between that life and the one you were leadg, which was beg an actn star who was spired by the femist movement and Black Power. How did you ci which path to take?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I’d seen women beg validated by men and marriage. Some people fall love wh the ia of marriage: “You n be a basketball player’s wife, and you’ll have wealth and money and kids, and you won’t have to work!” Yeah, but how do you hang on to ? That’s what the teachgs of Gloria Steem and the women’s movement were tellg me. If someone giv somethg to you that you didn’t earn, they n take away. I’ve given you the books. I’m here at the temple, and if you don’t m to marryg me and beg a Mlim woman, I will marry someone this afternoon who’s been prepared for me.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>“Prepared for me.” That’s que a phrase.</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">For him, was an honor to be prepared for a man. If men are the room, you have to walk out. You have to have a chaperone. He loved jazz. He loved sports. He was an amic. He uld have been that first love.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>It seems like you had to stggle a lot wh how to mata your pennce while beg relatnships wh men who were big shots, like Richard Pryor and Freddie Prze—both edians wh dg problems.</strong></p><p class="paywall">They didn’t do the dgs around me. They were tryg to change themselv to keep me their liv. But I uldn’t change them. I stggle wh that, wh lettg go. When you love someone, you let them go. And they’re not gog to e back.</p><p class="paywall">Wh Richard, he said he did want to go ld turkey, and he liked the fact of gog to Colorado and beg pure. And I said, “But you’re a world of men. I get the ll—the horse is bleedg. And I’m thkg, Richard’s gog to fall off the wagon. I jt knew: there’s gog to be a bad time if this horse di. He was sobbg om the re of his body. He was his bathrobe, and he was so distrght. Some people don’t see their partner that way, unls there’s a ath. I said, “We gotta <em>go</em>. The vet n’t e. We’ve got to put Gger [the horse] the back seat.” He said, “But ’s a Jaguar!” She got , head out the wdow, tail out the back. I’m, like, “Oh, my God, Richard’s gog to have a heart attack. The horse is gog to die, and I’m gog to get to an accint on the eeway!”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I’d like to pot out that anyone passg your r would have seen Pam Grier at the driver’s seat, Richard Pryor cryg a bathrobe the passenger’s seat, and then a horse tail flyg out of the back seat. That is nuts.</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Y, was. The vet said, “We’re all gog to be outsi when you drive up, bee we want to see this.” They gave her anthia and stch and surgery and everythg, and she survived.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>But that was also the moment you realized you uldn’t take re of Richard?</strong></p><p class="paywall">There’s always gog to be somethg. When he fell off the wagon, was bee of his iendship wh men—very strong men, who manipulated or forced him or fluenced him. They assumed that I had told him not to drk, and that wasn’t at all. When I walked to the hoe, I felt that I was beg attacked. Here I’m standg up to six very strong men. That’s when Richard sheepishly said, “You’re talkg to the wrong woman.” We both looked over at the kniv on the unter, and I said, “Not to worry. I’m not gog for the kniv.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Were people sred of you bee of your blaxploatn persona?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Well, that really wasn’t blaxploatn. That was more martial arts. Some people knew that I uld fend myself, but I’d rather leave the room quietly than serly jure someone.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>“Coffy” and “Foxy Brown” are cult classics now, but at the time they were pletely groundbreakg and outrageo and—</strong></p><p class="paywall">Tongue--cheek. You n say tongue--cheek! You had to have fun. You nnot be that dramatic a culture that needs lghter.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>They are funny. I love the <a href=">scene</a> “Foxy Brown” where you fight your way out of a lbian bar. That’s jt crazy.</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-7 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">It is not crazy! If I have to put a horse the back seat of my Jaguar, you know I have fought my way out—wh John Lennon at the Troubadour? The big fight?</p><p class="paywall"><strong>That’s right! You and John Lennon got thrown out of the Troubadour together 1974.</strong></p><p class="paywall">At the Osrs rehearsal, they asked me to jo them to see the Smothers Brothers—John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, and Peter Lawford. I’d never been to the Troubadour. The Smothers Brothers were g on, and everybody said, “John, be quiet.” They start the show, and he turned to me and said, “They’re fuckg borg.” And I went, “Sh-h-h!” The manager me up and said, “John, e on. No one would do this to you. Please.” The manager walks away, and John says, “Pam, c’mon, let’s sg!” I went, “No, John, please don’t sg! I’m the only black person this whole club. I nnot do this.” So he started sgg, and the manager up aga, and, next thg you know, chairs were thrown, legs and fists were flyg, and I’m the middle of . I had to fight my way out of there.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Part of what I love about movi like “Foxy Brown” and “Coffy” is their sense of eedom. They were dog thgs they uldn’t have done movi jt a few years earlier: sex, dgs, vlence. But ’s tertg to see how different people rpond at the time. There were some black crics who thought they were perpetuatg stereotyp of dg alers and pimps.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I kept tellg them, “Where do you thk we get them om? Those aren’t stereotyp. We get them om realy. We’d like to addrs them and rrect them, if possible.” It’s, like, when a woman tak off her earrgs and her sho, she’s gog to whoop your behd. So that’s my movi, O.K.?</p><p class="paywall">Certa cultur unrstand that. And other cultur thk ’s exploatn: “We don’t fight! We’re nservative black people—we don’t do that!” The hell you <em>don’t</em>. Black exploatn was labelled by two black advertisg executiv at Amerin Internatnal Pictur. That was the only way they uld tell people ’s black jargon, black mic, black culture. It wasn’t negative, bee would stay a movie theatre almost eight weeks, more than any other movie. Before I had done my movi, there were maybe twenty male blaxploatn movi, but they didn’t ll them blaxploatn bee they weren’t so sexy.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Like “Shaft” and “Super Fly.”</strong></p><p class="paywall">Fred Williamson, Jim Kelly, and Isaac Hay and all the other actors—they did a lot of movi wh even more gore and sex and dgs. But when I walked a man’s sho, now I’m explog women? No one fights for . You wore an Ao at the same time that Angela Davis did. What impact do you thk that had culturally?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Well, I was poorer, so I had the cheap Ao. Other people had more refed. They uld get iffed. The bloe was me, the jeans were me. I wore a lot of my own stuff. I jt had a different way of approachg Hollywood— wasn’t the grandse glamour. Roger Corman said, “Your energy is perfect. You haven’t been ed by the bs.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I was readg a piece about you om 1975, <em>New York</em>, and you were talkg about your ambns and what you wanted to do next.</strong></p><p class="paywall">Sleep!</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You said, “I thk I’d rather jt make movi for black people. You know, jt be satisfied wh what I’m dog. But I n’t. I’m too amb. I want all the acclaim.” Why did you ci to move away om blaxploatn?</strong></p><p class="paywall">They wanted me to ntue, and I said, “The story is over. There’s so much more. There’s <a href=">Mary Fields</a>, the first black female stageach driver, om the mail route Montana. I want to play her.” The stud said no one would believe there was a black female stageach driver—even though ’s the books. They said Bond girls are more tertg, and bikis. The needs of Hollywood are different than what my needs are.</p><p class="paywall">Today, after I saw “<a href=">Bombshell</a>,” I said, “Oh, my God, this is what I went through.” It’s different now, ’s vert, but at least we’re filmg . I jt thought was appropriate. I was very unfortable. And I didn’t want to hurt him.
