Sce 2004, ’s been guid by a simple philosophy: What would be ol to make? Wh that md, Flynn answered that he’d go small but mighty, bg the format of Mattel’s vtage two-ch-tall M.U.S.C.L.E. toys—a lp of multilored wrtlg figur—wh a range of MOTU characters. The unnventnal ia was le wh what Flynn and the pany had produced until that pot, cludg a 24-ch-tall Japane-style Shogun Warrr Stormtrooper. </p><p data-no-id="41" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Flynn says Mattel ially gave Super7’s M.U.S.C.L.E. ia the go-ahead, but then Flynn me back wh a bolr ask. He wanted to create a whole new le of slightly miaturized and more rtoonish-lookg MOTU toys to premiere at a 2016 SDCC pop-up shop, which they’d create the image of Skeletor’s lair. Mattel agreed to that stead, and when executiv vised the shop, they were so imprsed wh the toys, the hour-long l to buy them, and the prs attentn they had generated, they ma Super7 an offer. “We’re not dog anythg wh MOTU. You guys seem to know what you want to do. The ia was to expand the brand’s reach by offerg somethg specific to s next wave of viral-vio fans. He says he went so far as to have a prototype sculpted and the glter packagg signed, but when he prented to management he received a lewarm rponse. “No one at Mattel wanted to embrace ,” he says. </p><p data-no-id="44" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> When reached for ment, a spokperson for Mattel cled to elaborate. However, at the time, Mattel was prrizg toys for partners like DC Comics and Universal Pictur and hadn’t cid exactly how to reboot the anchise. “You don’t want to go to a meetg at a film stud to pch a potential new He-Man movie and have the executiv’ most recent touchpot be the 4 Non Blons meme,” Morse says, tryg to grok the logic. </p><p data-no-id="45" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> That all changed when Morse left Mattel and, January 2018, joed Super7 as s new vice print of marketg, product, and anchise velopment. (He has sce gone on to found his own toy pany, Plastic Meatball, which will be producg figur for Flash Gordon and Terry Gilliam’s <em>Time Bands</em>). In March of that year, Morse repched Lghg Prce Adam directly to Flynn durg a SDCC planng meetg. </p><p data-no-id="46" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Flynn liked the ncept, particularly bee he’d already watched toy llectors—pecially those who were gay—crowd the pany’s Skeletor’s lair pop-up to share how much He-Man meant to them while growg up, sparkg an awarens that they might not be the same as everyone else. In fact, gay men seemed to be among the three re groups of enthiasts who bought He-Man toys; the other two were bodybuilrs and law-enforcement officers, although the circl obvly overlap. Erika Scheimer has heard siar stori at nventns om now-grown men who shared what their childhood intifitn wh Prce Adam had meant to them, how helped them not feel so alone or sgular the world. We make the thg that hasn’t been seen yet.” He figured Lghg Prce Adam uld both honor that ial and stand for somethg more progrsive. “[The gayns] has been part of [the meme] the whole time,” he rells thkg. “We don’t want to downplay .”</p><p data-no-id="49" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> The proposal was sweetened by the fact that a prototype already existed and wouldn’t be hard to get. “Mattel had been great about sharg the MOTU toolg wh Super7 for the figur they were already workg on. So was really jt a phone ll to transfer all of those materials to ,” Morse says. </p><p data-no-id="50" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> Super7 announced a limed n for the figure on June 25, 2018, on Facebook. The pany origally planned to produce 2,500 figur and distribute them only at SDCC. But outcry om people who wanted the toy but uldn’t attend led Super7 to create a weeklong open onle preorr. (Jay Allen bought several.) At max, Flynn figured they’d sell 5,000 uns total. Instead, they sold 12,000. The qutn of whether or not to go one step further and make He-Man explicly gay never me up at Mattel, Morse says, bee the ncept never ma far enough along. “I thk the only ncern we had was that we didn’t want to be terpreted as offensive to the LGTBQ muny.” When Super7 received the missn, stayed te to that ambiguy, leavg some people upset that the nnectn wasn’t clearer. </p><p data-no-id="53" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> As one menter on put , “It’s not enough to imply or leave open to terpretatn. I know many fans like to image that Prce Adam is gay their own nnon. Why not acknowledge and embrace that?” Morse and Flynn are both straight—and neher really prsed this pot. Much like the viral vio, the toy still exists wh d and stereotypil margs (the lor pk, glter, rabows), alludg to Prce Adam’s sexualy whout necsarily outg him. </p><p data-no-id="54" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> The ultimate cisn about what happens next is up to Mattel. After Lghg Prce Adam’s release, the parent pany took s toy license back -hoe. (Flynn believ that the populary of Super7’s toys general helped nvce the pany that they uld still be profable.) Will Lghg Prce Adam make a reappearance, eher a new toy le or an upg show? There’s certaly some precent: In 2018, Netflix doubled down on the implied queer unrton of the origal 1980s rtoon<em> She-Ra</em>. No terpretatn is required when two female characters are a relatnship or one character has two fathers. </p><p data-no-id="55" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> For now, the pany won’t nfirm what plans has for queer reprentatn the next wave of MOTU projects. “<em>Masters of the Universe</em> has spired fans for more than three s and is, at s re, about enuragg each of to bee the bt versn of ourselv,” said a spokman a wrten statement. “Ultimately, our goal is for the stori and characters to ronate wh anyone and everyone who is a fan of the anchise.” That we haven’t yet seen a totally out and proud
