Once known as a Caberet Bar, the Missg Management soon realised that there was a Party Bar lackg om the Birmgham Gay Scene, and cid…. It is the famo part of Birmgham cy centre known simply as the Gay Village. Frequent visors to the gay scene have had to fight agast velopment plans several tim over the last year to keep their ‘safe space.
We went out to the Gay Village to fd out why ’s so important to the cy’s LGBT muny that we keep this area alive.

The performers 'We lerally have nowhere else we n go' Drag performers and events anisers Amber Cadavero and Pl Aleksandr shared the view that the Gay Village is their 'safe space' and they've been workg hard to keep the evolutn of the area full-swg. Amber said: "The Gay Village is really important to bee is our safe space. The duo have been the gay scene of Birmgham for around 25 years and have owned En Bar for over a .
" Gary said that he's a great believer the need for the Gay Village as a safe space and feels as though they're so close to losg a space that has been part of their muny for so long. The uncil has acknowledged the importance of the Gay Village at their meetg wh the LGBT muny at the venue. ' Drag Artist Eilish Nolan intifi as heterosexual but feels safer the Gay Village area than Broad Street where alternative style is 'not accepted'.
Eilish, also known unr the drag name Eyelash, said: "Gay Village on Hurst Street is really important to me bee beg very alternative and que different, I don't really f plac like Broad Street.

' The Gay Village is also home to stor specifilly tailored to servg the LGBT muny. Clonezone, Hurst Street, has been a leadg gay adult store across the UK for more than 30 years and has a shop the area. Staff say that their lotn the gay village is important for the fort of their ctomers.
CJ, manager of Clonezone, said: "Nowadays people say we don't need a gay village but 's a safe and clive space where people have the eedom to hold hands and be wh who ever they want.
"It's important for our store to be here bee people may not necsarily feel fortable visg a space that isn't as safe as the gay village. " The Area's Herage The Gay Village has evolved after begng wh one street 40 years ago. It has been the home of the cy’s gay scene sce the 1970s wh well known bars such as Jters and Nightgal servg the LGBT muny - often discretely.
