potent symbols of the last 50 years. Its mutabily is by sign: Origally eight strip (wh optnal circl of stars), the creatn was offered by artist Gilbert Baker and his llaborators whout tramark or pyright. They planted a seed that blooms, to this day, flag varieti well to the thoands, engagg wh the mastream and embodyg plexy jt like the LGBTQ+ muny proudly signifi. In celebratn of <a href=" target="_blank">Pri Month</a>, we spoke wh three experts visual culture to take a look back at the origs and evolutn of the queer muny’s unmistakable signifier, and what means to raise the flag today, tomorrow, and for all eterny.</p><h2><strong>1970s: Do It Yourself</strong></h2><p>In Andy Campbell’s sential book <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Queer x Dign</em></a><em>,</em> the historian wr that the Vietnam vet and marijuana activist Gilbert Baker “was asked by San Francis cy supervisor Harvey Milk to sign a new flag for the upg Gay Freedom Day celebratns,” 1978. While gay activists had reclaimed the pk triangle ed by Nazis to target homosexuals, Baker and his patrts wanted a new, optimistic in. His flag would feature eight strip, arranged spectral orr wh each lor assigned a meang: hot pk for sex, red for life, orange for healg, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, digo for sereny, and vlet for spir. A send versn featured an area filled wh tie-dyed stars, a queer take on the Amerin flag. In 1979, the cy’s Pri Para Commtee cid to display the striped Rabow flag along the entirety of the para route. Durg the manufacturg procs for the many flags, enough hot pk fabric uldn’t be found, and turquoise was also dropped to create an even number of six strip. The removal of sex and magic, “advertently mirrors what has happened as some LGBTQ+ have been embraced by mastream dienc,” says Andrew Shaffer, terim executive director of the GLBT Historil Society. “We have chosen to strip away the parts of ourselv and our muni that are harst to nform,” he adds. The society now ho a remnant of one of those origal flags. “It’s remarkably good ndn for s age,” Shaffer says.</p><h2><strong>1980s: Out of the Closets and Onto the Streets</strong></h2><p>As the LGBTQ+ muny fought to addrs (and survive) the HIV/AIDS epimic, Baker’s ia of the rabow flag as a symbol of hope took on eper meang.
