release of <em>Top Gun: Maverick</em>, the long-awaed follow-up to the 1986 blockbter, and while the movie did not necsarily <em>need</em> (the need for <em>speed!</em>) a sequel, I am ready. The origal <em>Top Gun </em>is about a bunch of people who know how to fly very sophistited fighter jets but have not yet termed that they n wipe sweat off their own fac wh even ordary paper towels. <em>Top Gun</em> blew all the hell up the summer of '86 for a variety of reasons: the Reagan-era jgoism, Kenny Loggs’ “Danger Zone,” the absolute nscence of a young Tom Cise. A few of walked to that multiplex and found ourselv exced ways our peers may not have been. And then he go to Kelly McGillis’ hoe and eventually they kiss all tongue-y and have silhouette sex ont of billowg curtas, and then Anthony Edwards di a door accint and Tom Cise los the will to fly and Val Kilmer ws Bt New Airplane Guy and then Tom Cise has to e back and they get the Rsian MiG on target lock and they shoot down and everyone is happy and then later that summer the Church of Scientology is like “Hey, Tom Cise, are you ee for bnch,” and now here we are. It’s a great movie. It’s impossible to know how many actors are , asi om the on I’ve mentned, but film historians have placed the number as high as three. </p><p data-no-id="15" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Now, I have heard the volleyball scene <em>Top Gun</em> referred to as “homoerotic.” The volleyball scene is not homoerotic. The volleyball scene is homosexual. The volleyball scene is what circu parti have been tryg to be ever sce. (Or at least that’s what I’m told. I’ve never been to one, as I am a lifelong Anthony Edwards.) To have watched all of this unfold, on the big screen, right the middle of puberty, was simply not fair. I was outmatched. I knew which way my sexualy was gog already, this scene was far om my first klg, but nfirmed the whole suatn a way that was terrifyg and thrillg all at once. Every gay man wh ten years of my age will tell you the same thg. It didn’t rpt ; fact, the volleyball scene is the bt argument <em>agast</em> the whole “groomg” nversatn we’re havg. If other boys my age saw this movie and end up straight, as I unrstand lerally dozens have, then sexual orientatn is unniably an immutable characteristic. </p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The volleyball scene didn’t make gay.
