For the artist, muny lear, and tor, this wasn’t jt a typil job; was rearch for their upg film, lled "Playland," about what would be Boston’s olst gay bar had not shut down 1998. But quickly beme much more than that.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I met my partner on my first night workg this space. I met some of my bt iends workg this space,” says Wt. “It be your fay and a fay system so quickly. I love them all so much and this past year has been credibly difficult, pecially navigatg what means to be a tipped enomy worker durg a panmic.”</p><p class="">Nearly 40 percent of LGBTQ people work dtri where they are at high risk of ntractg COVID-19, acrdg to a <a href=">report</a> by the Human Rights Campaign Foundatn. Along wh other public health cris and gentrifitn over the last 50 years, this panmic has h the LGBTQ muny particularly hard. Sce 2020 alone, Mache and Ramrod, The Boston Eagle, and clive venu like Bella Luna have all announced their permanent closg.</p><p class="">Wt had been velopg an ia about LGBTQ nightclub workers for years. The panmic shuttg everythg down ma the task of wrg the film even more urgent, as they spent the time preparg for productn and reflectg on the loss of life and much need muny space.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Artist Georn Wt has been velopg the ia for her film &quot;Playland&quot; for several years. And 's not jt Boston, 's across the Uned Stat,” says Wt. “Playland reprents the sort of lost gem of queer life wh the 1900s. It’s a warng sign for what n happen to queer nightlife Boston, should we not be advotg and supportg and also ristg the sort of ernment terventn to the spac.</p><p class="">Wt was drawn to Playland particular bee was known to be diverse and welg, ntrast to many of the area’s bars that were more segregated and genr rtrictive.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I was dog some diggg and me across an archive about a specific drag queen [Sylvia Sidney],” says Wt. “Readg about her experienc wh this particular lotn jt really sparked a creative tert for me.”</p><p class="">Sylvia Sidney was a lol stutn her own right, performg throughout New England for more than forty years until her ath 1998. Some say she still hnts Jacque’s Cabaret. She was famo for her crass, dience-mockg acts bars throughout Boston’s Combat Zone.</p><p class="">The Combat Zone was Boston’s adult entertament district. For a stretch of the 20th century, the neighborhood we now ll Downtown Crossg was led wh porn theaters, strip clubs, and other tablishments that the Boston Revelopment Authory wanted to keep om spreadg, like the gay bars Sylvia headled her act. (Courty of Boston Cy Archiv/Mayor John Colls Collectn)</figptn></figure><p class="nt-medium">“Prr to the 1960s, the least savory part of Boston had been Sllay square, where there were theaters and ars and bars, but durg urban renewal Sllay Square was molished to make way for Cy Hall Plaza,” says Joan Ilacqua, executive director of The History Project, the only anizatn foced exclively on documentg, prervg, and sharg the history of New England’s LGBTQ muni. Ilacqua says that the Combat Zone rose up as the adult playland of the cy.</p><p class="">Playland Cafe wasn’t signated a gay bar when opened 1937, but quickly gaed that reputatn.</p><p class="nt-medium">“After World War II, the ary was still ncerned about soldiers gog to gay bars and basilly gettg trouble to be a ltle phemistic about ,” says Ilaqua. “So they did a survey of bars Boston and created a list of bars where ary people were not allowed to go and Playland was one of those bars. That’s actually how we know that was a gay bar pretty early on.”</p><p class="">The Boston Revelopment Authory wanted to rid the cy’s downtown of adult nightlife. Rtrictive zong laws and raids forced many to close and kept others om reopeng as the AIDs crisis vastated the muny.</p><p class="">Earlier this year, Wt and I took a walk through the neighborhood, which is now  unregnizable om s days as the Combat Zone. We started at 21 Essex Street, the former se of Playland Cafe. It’s now a parkg garage.</p><p class="nt-medium">“It's not only the plight of Playland, but was the plight of all those bs that were downtown, and the sort of unsirabl that were ngregated there,” says Wt. “They were forced out and torn down so that a different populatn uld populate the downtown area.”</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Wt was drawn to Playland bee was known to be diverse and welg. Wh limed dialogue and dreamlike attentn to visuals, bounc time between two servers who share the same locker s apart.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I wanted to make more of a dream or a memory of someone who loved the space.”</p><p class="">They’re shootg the film early fall, wh a st that clus drag in Lady Bunny, and Danielle Cooper om FX’s Pose. Cooper says she was immediately drawn to the film bee of the way pays homage to a lost cultural stutn.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We’re tearg down plac that have shaped and transformed var muni and ci. In the term of the LGBTQIA space, black and brown spac, like feels like 's nstantly happeng,” says Cooper. “This is our opportuny to say, look, this place existed, and the were the powerful people that helped shape the muny Boston. Jt bee the space is gone do not mean they n erase .”</p><p class="">Wt left the job at Club Cafe for good last wter bee of ncerns about COVID. They’re exced about spac reopeng, and the long awaed prospect of -person art and entertament, but they say ’s btersweet.</p><p class="nt-medium">“Thgs are reopeng now, but we’ll never get to go to Playland,” says Wt. “I get to rebuild the space for this one night only kd of vibe.
