Not that this is the first film to engage the topic of beg gay East LA - QUINCEAÑERA is another superb film on the subject - but addrs so many other aspects of fay and social life happeng now that serv a wi dience.
Closeted schooled chef Diego Campos (a fe but by René Alvarado) works as a waer his grandmother Sara's (elegant Irene DeBari) ltle Mexin rtrant where gmpy homophobic chef Don Rogel (Luis Accelli) pris the kchen. When Bian enters, Pablo's attentns turn to the sexy lady and Diego is this mélange enters a whe gay uple who buy a 'flip' hoe across the street, a signal to the neighborhood that gentrifitn is jt around the rner. Jonathan is assigned all the l havg to do wh prejudice and is the one who wants out of the neighborhood as soon as their hoe is enhanced and their gay iends beg to vis.
Unlike many gay films, some female characters were given genue rol and they soared wh them. Boy meets closeted boy, boy dumps closeted boy, boy meets new gay uple on block, one half of the gay uple cheats on partner wh boy, purely dramatic vic a break-up (which typil televisn fashn, the uple didn't actually belong together - not the like the boy and cheatg partner do), till fally, aga te to TV nventns, all is rolved and happily so, that by the time the end tle creds roll, boy ends up wh the right half of the 't get me wrong, 's a well-ma film wh some excellent performanc. It's fely a crowd-pleaser and 's sure to be enjoyed by nearly any gay-intified dience member who views .

Apparently, the distributors didn't see any cross-over appeal as the movie seems to be head to a DVD release whout even a cursory theatril release some of the major markets where did not make to (or which do not have) a gay and lbian film ftival. Then a gay uple move next door--and Diego falls for one of them (Steve Callahan) is extremely light and a ltle lackg plot--but how many movi to we see about a gay Lato man fallg love and stgglg to e out?
Instead of the historil foc on those two ethnic groups NYC, ESS dramatiz the current flt le between middle class Lato rints LA's Echo Park neighborhood and well-off gays & lbians who are buyg up their hom, gentrifyg their area, and threateng to displace them. I saw this film at Philly's gay film ftival.
It seemed directed to appeal to a gay dience, but tastefully, a way that won't be a turn-off to straight Entertag. I really admire the way the Director Carlos Portugal has brought together many issu how people our own lato muny feel about outsi enomic fn, mori and gays.
