Apparently, he wasn’t the first person asked. <em>The Hollywood Reporter</em> had jt n a piece headled “<a href=">Why Osr Host Has Bee the Least Wanted Job Hollywood,</a>” notg the A-list talents (Oprah Wey, Ta Fey) who had reportedly passed. Hart, ntrast, had dited publicly that was a dream gig. On Instagram, he said that he was “blown away simply bee this has been a goal on my list for a long time.”</p><p class="paywall">Wh hours, the Inter unearthed a number of homophobic tweets om Hart’s past, cludg one, now leted, om 2011: “Yo if my son home & try’s 2 play wh my dghters doll hoe I’m gog 2 break over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.’ ” Another tweet scribed a Twter er’s photo as “a gay billboard for AIDS.” There were sprklgs of “gay by associatn,” “no homo,” and “fat faced fag” throughout his feed. The journalist Benjam Lee, of the <em>Guardian</em>, <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">shared</a> a route om Hart’s 2010 edy special, “Serly Funny,” which he says, “One of my biggt fears is my son growg up and beg gay. That’s a fear. Keep md, I’m not homophobic. . . . Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I n prevent my son om beg gay, I will.” He go on to scribe his son Hendrix’s possible “homosexual tennci,” to which his fatherly rponse is “Stop, that’s gay!”</p><p class="paywall">You know how the thgs work: rapid-fire outrage, hand-wrgg over how culpable people should be for old jok, and—last night, on cue—the dénouement. Takg to Instagram aga, Hart me out wh a non-apology (“I’m not gog to let the crazs trate me”) and then, an hour or so later, <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">tweeted</a> out an actual apology (“I scerely apologize to the LGBTQ muny for my sensive words om my past”) and whdrew as the Osrs host.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Hart was reportedly given an “ultimatum” by the Amy to apologize, which didn’t exactly need another own goal after <a href=">#OsrsSoWhe</a>, the “<a href=">Bt Popular Film</a>” bacle, and clg ratgs. The viewers who still tune clu a fervent gay fan base (Hi!), who will want to watch Lady Gaga perform “Shallow” peace. And, retrospect, how uld Hart have possibly prid over a cematic year that clus such L.G.B.T.Q.-flavored films as “Can You Ever Five Me?,” “The Favoure,” and “Boy Erased,” the last about a gay teen whose parents send him to nversn therapy?</p><p class="paywall">I n’t solve the problem of how acuntable edians should be for sensive jok om years ago (although 2010, which Hart scribed as “days of old,” wasn’t exactly pre-Stonewall). I n only tell you how my sk crawled and my heart sank as I read Hart’s “jok.” There’s a specific brand of homophobia—fear of gayns your own children—that is so hurtful, bee s implitn is that love is ntgent upon fear.
