first real job life, I had some pretty big plans for what I was gog to wear. I had been hired, after a lot of persistence on my part, as a sal gnt at The Polo Shop. It was 1987, and I was a high-school senr San Anton, a walkg mood board of spiratns gathered om magaz and movi, books and MTV. I had recently emerged om a New Wave chrysalis—<u>Duran Duran</u> hair, a wardrobe like an advertisement for the Memphis Group, that wonrfully wackadoodle sign outf started by Ettore Sottsass. I’d never heard of him, but when I enuntered his athetic beg scribed some years later as “a shotgun weddg between Bhs and Fisher-Price,” stck me as ad on. Unveiled at the Salone l Mobile 1981, Memphis was ma for that ’s love of exaggeratn and big statement, loud lor and e optimism.
