In fact, I had wanted to wre a feature about bee of s amazg backstory. Wiggs was nearly fished wrg the book when, 2016, she had a massive stroke. The Pulzer falist (and ex-wife of Salman Rhdie), now 75, not only lost the abily to wre but fot what she had already wrten. She enlisted the help of her dghter, Lara Porzak, to help her plete the 517-page novel. In the afterword, Lara scrib the experience poignant tail: Over the urse of several years, she read the book aloud to her mother multiple tim, until the characters me to feel like Lara and Marianne’s fay. In a way, holds up all too well. It is exactly the sort of thg I loved when I was a teenager, full of unmigated sex, ath and profundy. In the urse of the film, the men expand to low-gra pranks and vandalism, and eventually form a terrorist cell lled Project Mayhem that plants bombs skyscrapers. The film, based on a relatively unknown <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">1996 novel by Chuck Palahni</a>, took the top spot at the box office s openg weekend, but then quickly fizzled. On DVD, however, found a send life, sellg lns. Today, men still quote “Fight Club,” still discs what the movie really means, and still drs like s characters for Halloween. In the bat surroundg the release of Todd Phillips’s “<a href=">Joker</a>”—another movie about lost men risg up—“Fight Club” was one of the most reached-for parisons. The movie has bee part of the ntemporary mass-cultural non through which large numbers of men try to thk through masculy.</p><p class="paywall">The first sign that “Fight Club” might spire men to do anythg other than quote “Fight Club” on their Facebook walls me the mid-two-thoands, wh the rise of the “sctn muny.” The were groups of men searchg together—sometim live semars, but creasgly via onle Listservs—for an objectively reliable set of techniqu that would maximize their chanc of gettg women bed. The groups had existed below the cultural radar for s, well before “Fight Club.” In 2005, they received a new level of attentn when Neil Strss published “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Game</a>,” a memoir/vtigatn about his time livg a Los Angel group hoe voted to the refement of sctn techniqu. Strss attempted to engeer his own transformatn om, the lexin of his hoemat, “AFC” (average trated chump) to “PUA” (pickup artist) to “PUG” (pickup gu). Though the book end wh him takg a cril view of the PUA experience, s publitn—pl a wave of bemed media verage—brought new legns of cur men to pickup artistry and, by extensn, to a world view that amed teractns between men and women as a scientifilly hackable qut for maximum sex wh mimal emotnal vtment.</p><p class="paywall">In the years that followed, I beme a regular lurker on msage boards not jt the PUA world but also across the works of male rentment to which pickup artistry equently functned as a gateway dg: “men’s rights” activists, the anti-femist hive lled the Red Pill, <a href=">cels</a>, the amorpho “<a href=">alt-right</a>.” Browsg through this world, I saw “Fight Club” referenc and offhand worship of Brad Pt’s character, Tyler Durn, all the time. Tyler is an alpha male who do what he wants and don’t let anyone stand his way; “Fight Club,” then, was a lson what you had to do to stop beg a miserable beta like the film’s other ma character, a trated whe-llar office worker played by Edward Norton.</p><p class="paywall">There was ltle discsn on the boards of how Tyler is ultimately revealed to be a hallucatn who exists only the Norton character’s md: a projectn oked up by his subnsc to yank him out of an existential malaise of alienatg rporate work, ndo payments, and <em class="small">IKEA</em> talogu. In the fal scene, Norton’s character “kills” Tyler, implicly regnizg—and pickg—a path between mdls middle-class nsumerism and the nihilistic will to power of the terrorist. This act is ccial to the movie’s most articulate fenrs: proof that “Fight Club” functns as a crique of Tyler, not a valorizatn. But when I saw this element of the film acknowledged onle, was ually prented as a thematic flaw, or a sop to the mands of big-stud moviemakg. No one was namg himself after Norton’s character. In fact, Norton’s character don’t have a name.</p><p class="paywall">Over the summer, I talked about the endurg fluence of “Fight Club” wh Harris O’Malley, who ns a datg-advice Web se lled Pagg Dr. NerdLove. O’Malley offers datg advice “to geeks of all strip”: relatnship tips geared toward fans of vio gam, ic books, sci-fi, and the like, formulated wh an eye toward steerg people away om the appeal of PUA-type misogynistic snake oil. In the e-mails he receiv and the one-on-one achg ssns that he giv, O’Malley told me that “Fight Club” up so regularly that he has e to expect . A lot of people who ntact him for advice, he says, are “young disaffected men who feel they’ve done everythg they were told to do, but nothg is happeng. And ’s slowly startg to dawn on them that the rewards they were promised are never gog to appear, certaly not the way they were promised. ‘Fight Club’ and ‘The Matrix’ seem to provi a lot of meang. And we’re very, very pissed off.</p></div></blockquote><p class="paywall">In theory, O’Malley said, “Fight Club” was a utnary tale about where the adrenale sh of “wakg up” n take you. Tyler starts by preachg empowerment and thenticy but ends up sowg vlence and terror, mandg cult-like subservience om the men he claims to be liberatg. Dpe this, O’Malley said, “I do meet a lot of people who feel like they should be more like Tyler.” They also talk about the appeal of jog a band of brothers uned by purpose. “Fcher do his job too well,” O’Malley said. “He sells why was temptg to fall for the cult of Tyler. But he don’t que show the horror of where that gets you. Or, for some people, that’s not the part of the movie that sticks.”</p><p class="paywall">Recently, when I checked out Palahni’s novel om my lol library, the librarian, a woman her thirti, visibly stggled to hi her displeasure. She had bad memori, she explaed, of an ex-boyiend who badgered her not jt to watch the movie and read the book but also to acknowledge s geni. Experienc like the seem to be fairly wispread, and are referred to often on social media. Of urse, “Fight Club” (both the book and the movie) has s share of female fans. But ’s also a symbol for certa sistent myopias of masculy. The story has jt one female character of any signifince: Marla Sger (portrayed the film by Helena Bonham Carter). The namels narrator p for Marla, though we never see him gettg to know her well; Tyler her for acrobatic sex followed by emotnal neglect. What do mean for a man to tell his girliend that <em>this</em>, of every movie the world, is his favore, or the one wh the most to say about genr today? In my nversatns wh this pletely unscientific sample of men wh fierce attachments to the film, their foc was overwhelmgly on the movie’s first act: on the namels protagonist’s sense of ennui and adriftns; his mistaken assumptn that endls work hours or the purchas that they enabled him to make will brg him meang; his tertwed currents of empts and longg. One man scribed how “Fight Club” helped him toward the realizatn that he didn’t have to work all the time, and didn’t have to worry so much about what other people thought about his life choic. Another talked about how the movie helped motivate him to specialize existentialism when he pursued a master’s gree psychology—and, eventually, to wre and self-publish a novel about a bter office worker who, stead of jog Project Mayhem, go to therapy. At first, the office worker hat therapy, but eventually his ssns help him work his way to a new level of honty about the disnnect between what he wants om the (imperfect, herently limg) world and how he is actually livg.</p><p class="paywall">To my md, stori like the—stori of men driven to take some ownership of their fate, but whout seekg out opportuni to flict pa on others—are more tertg and val than anythg “Fight Club.” But how many people would want to watch the stori? Stg the theatre watchg “<a href=">Joker</a>,” I felt only spair. The movie prents wh Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill social outst—a whe man, perhaps evably—so neglected and maltreated by the world that his reurse to vlence is all but guaranteed. If jumpg om one movie to another were possible, he would be a great ndidate for Project Mayhem.
