After his passg, regnn of his mendable work the tate was partially renamed his honour; As such, was at that time that The Mount Gilboa Plantatn changed to The Mount Gay Plantatn - rived om the e of his middle name; as another plantatn already existed at the time unr the name “Mount Alleyne”.

Mount Gay, is documented as the olst produced m across the world and began wh jt a pot still hoe veloped on the sugar ne plantatn 1703. Havg passed through var owners between the 1600s to the 1800s, the entire Mount Gay plantatn was purchased at a later date the early 20th century by Mr Aubrey Ward Frank. If you look closely at a bottle of Mount Gay m to this date, you will still fd the signature of Mr Ward, the English/Irish settler to Barbados who was sential turng the Mount Gay Rum brand to the m of Barbados.

I was really lookg forward to visg Mount Gay’s historic distillery and takg their Distillery Experience Tour and I was not disappoted!

Our mi-van pulled to a very unassumg lane on Mount Gilboa and after beg weled by a Mount Gay Host, we were soon si the Distillery’s imprsive lounge listeng to a knowledgeable Mount Gay Ambassador tell about the history of the plantatn and m makg on the island. Chter told the fascatg story of how one of the origal plantatn owners, John Sober (Serly – I’m not makg that name up) named the m distillery after his manager, Sir John Gay Alleyne. You see, was John Gay’s learship the late 1700s that put Mount Gilboa (soon to bee Mount Gay) Rum on the map and on the path that mak one of the most reputable m brands the world today.

It wasn’t too long before our small group (< a dozen) journeyed outsi to the warm and betiful grounds where our host Ta walked over to the well ed to source the water for Mount Gay m.
