TOKEN GAY OF THE DAY: THAD AND PATRICK “THE FAY STONE”
Although might seem to be a given that the film posss elements of queerns jt by the fact that featur openly gay supportg characters, a rary for a mastream film wh A-list actors 2005, The Fay Stone’s queerns go much eper than that. And ironilly enough, barely any of that heart and tone even clus the actual gay characters. There’s Rachel McAdams who sh as the bchy younger sister who only exists to stir the pot (a character that undoubtedly ronat the most wh many gay men over the holidays, forced to participate their fay’s heterosexist tradns).
And if the film wasn’t already rich enough wh gay subtext, The Fay Stone proudly Judy Garland’s origal performance of “Have Yourself a Merry Ltle Christmas” om Meet Me St.
But any appreciatn of The Fay Stone would be remiss whout mentng s own famo scene when at Christmas Eve dner Meredh attempts to engage prospective gay parents Thad and Patrick a bate over nature vs.
THE VOICE OF CHICAGO'S GAY, LESBIAN, BI, TRANS AND QUEER COMMUNITY SINCE 1985
Thgs go embarrassgly awry when Sybil jok that she sperately hoped all her sons would be gay, which prompts Meredh to reply that she would thk any parent would want a normal child. The film is somewhat dated that barely s actual queer characters orr to showse this msage, and ’s hard not to raise an eyebrow by 2022 standards as we see the gay brother watch om the r as Everett is the one to leave behd one versn of life for another. There’s a eply unfortable dner scene where Meredh is cluelsly homophobic, and another scene where she accintally pots to a black character as a charas clue for The Bri Wore Black.
After the strata scene, I thk the send most famo is the dner scene: Meredh has a really hard time askg Everett’s gay brother and his partner if they’d really want a gay son. At a fay dner, Sybil starts talkg about how she secretly wished all her sons would turn out gay, so they would never leave her.
Meredh openly stat her opn that people who are gay are "challenged" and that any parent would want their child to be "normal". Thad Stone, one of Sybil’s sons, is a gay man everyone the fay lov.
