ATTUS TOWARD GAY MEN AND LBIAN WOMEN MORATE HETEROSEXUAL ADULTS’ SUBJECTIVE STRS RPONSE TO WNSG HOMONEGATIVY
Mory strs theory poss that members of a stigmatized group, such as sexual mori (lbian, gay, bisexual, and other non-heterosexual dividuals), are particularly subject to ill effects of mory-specific events (strsors), cludg overt homonegativy. Although adverse effects of homonegativy are well documented for sexual mori, ltle is known about effects of wnsg homonegativy on heterosexual dividuals. As a growg number of heterosexual dividuals hold acceptg views of sexual mory dividuals, some trimental effects of homonegativy may extend to heterosexual dividuals. For example, prr studi monstrate that when racial majory-group members wns discrimatn agast mory-group members, they may experience strs rponse, particularly if they hold posive attus toward the mory-group. In this experimental study, 263 heterosexual adults (Mage = 34.47 years, SD = 9.67, 51.7% female) were randomized to eher wns homonegativy or to a ntrol ndn. Participants rated subjective strs on a 0–100 visual analogue sle both immediately before and after the film-based ductn. Participants also pleted a measure of their attus toward gay men and lbian women. Moratn analys dited that participants who were more acceptg of gay men and lbian women experienced greater strs after the ductn than those wh ls acceptg views. G., wnsg homonegativy), yet only sexual mory dividuals would be at risk for velopg adverse out as a rult (Meyer, 2003).
Unrstandably then, work that exam effects of homonegativy appears to foc on sexual mori, and ls is known about effects of homonegativy on heterosexual dividuals. While one study found that heterosexual women acted more clively after wnsg ostracizatn of a gay man (Salvati et al., 2019), ltle is known about behavral or strs rpons to homonegativy. However, is possible that heterosexual dividuals who have acceptg views of sexual mori may experience a strs rponse after wnsg homonegativy (though likely differently and to a lser extent than for sexual mori).
ENTREPRENRSHIP AND COMG OUT: EXPLORG THE EXPERIENC OF GAY AND LBIAN ENTREPRENRS
Abstract OBJECTIVE To pare the prevalence of negative mental health out among lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr, queer, qutng, and asexual (LGBTQ+) veterary profsnals and stunts wh the prevalence reported a prev study of veterarians; pare LGBTQ+ veterary profsnals and stunts regard to accs to LGBTQ+ polici and rourc, workplace or school climate, and inty disclosure; and exame whether the variabl were associated wh mental health (eg, psychologil distrs) or work- and school-related (eg, emotnal labor) out. SAMPLE 440 LGBTQ+ veterary profsnals and stunts the Uned Stat and Uned Kgdom. PROCEDURES Between July and December 2016, a web-based qutnnaire was distributed through email msag to members of LGBTQ+ veterary groups and announcements at general veterary and LGBTQ+-foced nferenc and newsletters. RESULTS Nonheterosexual cis men, nonheterosexual cis women, and transgenr and nonbary dividuals all had higher lifetime prevalenc of suicidal iatn and attempted suici, pared wh prevly reported prevalenc for male and female veterarians general. Profsnals reported more welg climat than did stunts (eg, lower equency of exposure to homophobic language and more supportive environments) and greater inty disclosure; however, stunts reported greater accs to stutnal rourc and polici. Climate variabl had a more robt relatnship wh negative out than did accs to LGBTQ+ polici or inty disclosure variabl. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Comparatively high rat of suicidal iatn and suici attempts among LGBTQ+ profsnals and stunts and the relatnship between climate variabl and negative mental health out suggted enhanced efforts are need to improve the climat veterary workplac and lleg." name="scriptn * measuring dimensions of lesbian and gay male experience *
Although ltle is known about heterosexual dividuals’ strs rpons to wnsg homonegativy, some sight may be drawn om rearch examg Whe dividuals’ rpons to wnsg racism. Some heterosexual dividuals, such as alli, may feel prsure to nont homonegativy when they wns (Lapote, 2015), yet others may be unsure of how to rpond, potentially producg psychologil distrs (Ryan and Wsel, 2012).
Still others, such as those who hold heterosexist beliefs and valu, may experience ltle rponse to wnsg homonegativy.
Though prr studi suggt that racial majory-group members’ subjective rpons to wnsg racism/discrimatn differ by attus toward mory-group members, this has not been experimentally examed among heterosexual dividuals exposed to homonegativy.

Wh ltle experimental work examg exposure to homonegativy among eher sexual mori or heterosexual people, specific ponents of potential strs or behavral rpons to homonegativy are unknown (e. Th, at this early stage, may be eful to nsir heterosexual dividuals’ exposure to homonegativy more generally as a potential acute strsor.
Therefore, even acute exposure to homonegativy, if produc a strs rponse, may crease vulnerabily to adverse out for heterosexual dividuals. Taken together, heterosexual dividuals’ rpons to homonegativy may differ signifintly based on their attus toward sexual mori, and a growg number of heterosexual people who hold more posive attus may be particularly affected by wnsg homonegativy pared to those wh ntral or negative views. In le wh a mory strs mol (Meyer, 2003) and work on majory-group rponse to discrimatn (Lickel et al., 2011), we might expect that some heterosexual dividuals – pecially those who hold more posive views of sexual mori – would experience an acute strs rponse upon wnsg homonegativy.
To addrs gaps current rearch, we experimentally examed effects of exposure to homonegativy on self-reported perceived strs, one ponent of the general strs rponse. We hypothized that (1) dividuals wnsg homonegativy would experience a stronger subjective strs rponse than those who saw a ntral film and (2) heterosexual participants wh more acceptg attus toward sexual mori would experience greater subjective strs rpons after exposure to homonegativy.
