mic they love. "We have huge rpect for the pneers of hoe mic and nightclubbg-- some of them were gay," Runll, aka DJ Raf Daddy, said an <a href=">terview</a>. Based on that scriptn, you might expect hands--the-air club sounds om this project (and there is some of that) but <em>Be Strong</em> is primarily about pop-- the kd that is gooey, upliftg, and ocsnally goofy.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><cm-un></cm-un><p>The thg that stands out immediately (and is immediately likable) about the rerd is jt how earnt the guys are about their optimism. The quot "Love is lovely" and "war is ugly" show up on the album and s sleeve, and nearly every track tails some kd of fondns-- of a partner, of a band, of a iend or jt someone you bumped to on the dancefloor. (Seems like the Care Bears uld have also worked as a band name, and fact the furry gang appears the vio for <a href=">"Church"</a>.) This heart-on-sleeve emotg is somethg Goddard and . did very well on Hot Chip's <a href="><em>One Life Stand</em></a>, and works here much the same way did on tracks such as "Brothers": simple sentiments exprsed simply over mic that buoys the sweet parts and giv weight to the more ser stretch.</p><p>If <em>Be Strong</em> is all about adoratn, the biggt recipient of is mic self. On the songs, Runll and Goddard rep and rework lots of their personal favor. One track is lled "Heart of the Congos", for the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">classic reggae LP</a> of the same name, and artists such as Kraftwerk, Wiley, Hot Cy, and Steely Dan all get shoutouts along the way. This is fely what Simon Reynolds would ll "rerd-llector rock," and I'm generally wh him about the pfalls of artists' nstantly lookg backwards, but the guys pull off. For one, they tend to be futurist their nostalgia, able to not jt reterpret but rentextualize thgs like rave or Chigo hoe. Also, there's a fan-like pury the way they sg about the stuff-- you n tell how much means to them.</p><native-ad posn="-ntent" shouldDisplayLabel="te"></native-ad><p>It's worth notg that <em>Be Strong</em> ocsnally veers to silly terrory to the extent that you n't really fet 's a si project. There are tracks, like "Bear Hug", sort of a twerked-up <a href=">"Humpty Dance"</a> (key le: "All you out there on the floor, gonna get you my paws and give you a bear hug"), that would fely not make the fal cut of a Hot Chip album. But the guys' mment to mic-as-fun and big, croon-y hooks (Goddard's velvet vols sound as good as ever here) keeps enjoyable throughout. The key, though, is that Goddard and Runll set out to make somethg sentimental and happy-soundg and never bothered to worry if seemed ol or not to do so.
