PARIS (AP) — The mother of a pupil at a French pre-school stabbed a teacher to ath ont of her class Friday, the last day of the school year, thori said. The tn mister said the mother apparently had "ser psychiatric problems," and pledged support for teachers the face of angry or vlent parents. Police said the mother was taken to ctody. Deadly attacks a school are extremely rare France, and the stabbg ont of a class of 5- and 6-year-olds raised ncern at the hight levels. French Print Franis Hollan exprsed outrage at the attack at the Edouard Herrt school Albi southern France. Edutn Mister Beno Hamon traveled immediately to the school, and told reporters that the mother of a pupil "mted this abomable act a class agast a remarkable teacher." A police official said the mother stabbed the teacher wh a knife soon after school started Friday morng. Hamon said the attacker's child had been the school only for a month and a half, and the mother had had very ltle ntact wh the school staff until Friday. It was unclear whether her 5-year-old dghter was class at the time of the attack. Police and cy officials would not ment on possible reasons for the attack on Fabienne Terral-Calmès, 34. The sla teacher had two small dghters, Hamon said. The regnal prosecutor was expected to speak publicly about the se Friday eveng. After Friday's attack, "the children were immediately taken by another teacher who brought them to another classroom to talk to them, to tell them stori, to try to break them away om what they had jt lived through," Hamon said. Marie-Odile Gay, a member of the regnal health and safety mtee for the Edutn Mistry, said the mother thought the teacher had lled her dghter a thief, and that misperceptn might have played a role the attack. Gay said that the mother, 47, had received psychiatric unselg the past, and had been acced by police earlier this year of abandong her 15-year-old son. Gay said the 5-year-old dghter had not had any difficulti school, and was transferred Friday to the re of social servic. "This is somethg that will stay wh her forever," Gay said. "It's very important to ensure that she is red for." Some teachers plaed that staff cuts have left teachers more vulnerable, and urged better attentn to the tensns they face wh some parents. But fellow teacher Robert Couffignal of the regnal teachers unn sisted that the attack was an "isolated se" that had nothg to do wh this particular school, and warned agast gog overboard wh secury measur as a rult. "Metal tectors at schools are not the answer," he told The Associated Prs by telephone. "We want to have close ntact wh the parents that creat a lk of tst." He said the larger problem for schools his regn and around France is tensn over enomic cle and lack of job prospects for young people, pecially those om poor or immigrant backgrounds. The tn mister lamented the pecially paful timg of the attack. "This July 4, the moment when we should be happy for all children that school is over, that vatns are begng, that teachers succsfully pleted the school year, has been turned to a day of mourng ... by this abomable crime," Hamon said. France still feels srs om a shootg at a Jewish school Touloe southern France 2012 that left three children and a rabbi ad.
