IntroductnA signifint amount of attentn has been directed toward heterosexuals’ attus toward gay men and lbians (Herek 1984, 1988, 1994; Herek and Capan 1996; Hrichs and Rosenberg 2002; Lim 2002). While rearchers have examed attus toward lbians and gay men among var populatns (e. G., psychologists, social workers, llege stunts), no rearch—to date—has specifilly examed attus toward lbians and gay men wh the ntext of Sport Studi, rearchers have examed the experienc of gay and lbian athlet, ach and admistrators (Griff 1998; Ker and Krane 2006; Krane 2001; Pronger 1990).

Consirable rearch has documented the homonegative and heterosexist climate of many sport settgs (Griff 1998; Krane 2001; Pronger 1990). Bias and discrimatn agast gay and lbian athlet has been found to occur through negative stereotyp, verbal ments, social isolatn, homophobic harassment, discrimatn team selectn, and negative media rearchers have explored gay and lbian athlet sport experienc, no rearch has specifilly vtigated heterosexual stunt-athlet’ attus toward lbians and gay men.

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore attus toward lbians and gay men among self-intified heterosexual male and female llegiate stunt-athlet. Attus were asssed relatnship to the stunt-athlet’ genr, sport, and ntact (wh gay men and lbians).

D’Augelli (1992) dited that of 121 unrgraduate gay and lbian stunts at Pennsylvania State Universy (a ral mp Pennsylvania) who pleted a qutnnaire examg their experienc on mp, 77% had been verbally harassed, 27% had been threatened wh physil vlence, 22% had been chased, and 5% had been physilly asslted. More recently, rearch has suggted that gay and lbian stunts still experience the llege climate as an unwelg and unsupportive environment (Rank 2003).

In a natnally regnized study, Rank (2003) examed the mp climate for gay, lbian, bisexual, and transgenr (GLBT) stunts, faculty and staff. Rank surveyed approximately 1, 700 GLBT stunts, faculty and staff at 14 lleg and universi and found that one-third of the participants experienced anti-gay harassment. Based upon the extensive body of lerature examg heterosexuals’ attus toward gay men and lbians (outsi of sport), we formulated the followg three hypoth: (1) male stunt-athlet’ attus toward gay men and lbians will be more negative pared to female stunt-athlet (Lim 2002). Also, male stunt-athlet’ attus will be more negative when evaluatg gay men than when evaluatg lbians (Lim 2002), (2) attus toward lbians and gay men will be more negative among men’s team sport participants (basketball, lacrosse, and soccer; Curry 1991, 1998; Kimmel and Msner 2001) pared to men’s dividual (swimmg/divg, track and field, tennis, golf), women’s team (crew, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, softball, field hockey, cheerleadg, basketball), and women’s dividual sport (swimmg/divg, track and field, tennis), and (3) ntact experienc (wh gay men and lbians) will be associated wh more posive attus toward lbians and gay men (Herek and Capan 1996).
