D’Augelli (1992) dited that of 121 unrgraduate gay and lbian stunts at Pennsylvania State Universy (a ral mp Pennsylvania) who pleted a qutnnaire examg their experienc on mp, 77% had been verbally harassed, 27% had been threatened wh physil vlence, 22% had been chased, and 5% had been physilly asslted. Rank surveyed approximately 1, 700 GLBT stunts, faculty and staff at 14 lleg and universi and found that one-third of the participants experienced anti-gay harassment. Forty-three percent of the participants scribed their mp environment as “homophobic” and as a rult exprsed a need to nceal their sexual the universy ntext, the athletic partment has been scribed as “the most homophobic place on mp” (Jabson 2002, p.

It is important to regnize that while numero siari have been found among the experienc of gay and lbian athlet, there exist a number of signifint differenc between the two groups.

Consistent wh rearch examg attus toward lbians and gay men outsi the sport doma (Lim 2002), lbian athlet have also been found to receive a greater gree of acceptance pared to gay athlet (Griff 1998; Jabson 2002; Pronger 1990) culture of sport tends to be pecially nservative, and most people wh equate male heterosexualy wh strength—and homosexualy wh weakns.

As a rult, gay athlet are often forced to nceal their sexualy, and siar to the lbian athlete, perform the heterosexual role. While no rearch has specifilly examed attus toward gay men across sport type (dividual, team), scholars have argued that gay men will have greater difficulty g out when on a team sport (pared to an dividual sport).

In team sports, the bonds formed between athlet are so cril that g out wh any personal rmatn that would threaten to unrme or break those bonds is extremely risky for any gay athlete. Moreover, rearch addrsg the homophobic nature of sport has also nsistently noted the pecially hostile atmosphere of men’s mastream team sports (i. Rearchers (both -and outsi sport) have found that the most extreme homophobia is often found among tightly-kn groups of men, who need both to ny any sexual ponent to their bondg and who n crease their solidary by turng vlently on mory groups/dividuals (i.
