While rearchers have examed attus toward lbians and gay men among var populatns (e. G., psychologists, social workers, llege stunts), no rearch—to date—has specifilly examed attus toward lbians and gay men wh the ntext of Sport Studi, rearchers have examed the experienc of gay and lbian athlet, ach and admistrators (Griff 1998; Ker and Krane 2006; Krane 2001; Pronger 1990). Consirable rearch has documented the homonegative and heterosexist climate of many sport settgs (Griff 1998; Krane 2001; Pronger 1990).
Bias and discrimatn agast gay and lbian athlet has been found to occur through negative stereotyp, verbal ments, social isolatn, homophobic harassment, discrimatn team selectn, and negative media rearchers have explored gay and lbian athlet sport experienc, no rearch has specifilly vtigated heterosexual stunt-athlet’ attus toward lbians and gay men. Studyg heterosexual stunt-athlet’ attus is cril acquirg an -pth unrstandg of the climate of llegiate sport for the gay and lbian athlete.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore attus toward lbians and gay men among self-intified heterosexual male and female llegiate stunt-athlet. Attus were asssed relatnship to the stunt-athlet’ genr, sport, and ntact (wh gay men and lbians).

Homophobia and the Universy CampRearch shows signifint homophobia and heterosexism on US llege mp (Bowen and Bourgeois 2001; D’Augelli 1992). D’Augelli (1992) dited that of 121 unrgraduate gay and lbian stunts at Pennsylvania State Universy (a ral mp Pennsylvania) who pleted a qutnnaire examg their experienc on mp, 77% had been verbally harassed, 27% had been threatened wh physil vlence, 22% had been chased, and 5% had been physilly asslted. More recently, rearch has suggted that gay and lbian stunts still experience the llege climate as an unwelg and unsupportive environment (Rank 2003).
In a natnally regnized study, Rank (2003) examed the mp climate for gay, lbian, bisexual, and transgenr (GLBT) stunts, faculty and staff. Rank surveyed approximately 1, 700 GLBT stunts, faculty and staff at 14 lleg and universi and found that one-third of the participants experienced anti-gay harassment.

Forty-three percent of the participants scribed their mp environment as “homophobic” and as a rult exprsed a need to nceal their sexual the universy ntext, the athletic partment has been scribed as “the most homophobic place on mp” (Jabson 2002, p. An athletic director quoted The NCAA News stated, “athletics has been the last bastn of homophobia. It’s one of the few plac left where homophobia is realy is that for many of our gay, lbian, and bisexual athlet, ’s not safe terllegiate athletics” (Haw 2001, p.

Ltle attentn, however, has been directed toward heterosexual athlet’ inty and the ways which homophobia may serve as a mechanism which to “bond” and nnect wh sport, homophobia is learned and manifted numero ways.
It is important to regnize that while numero siari have been found among the experienc of gay and lbian athlet, there exist a number of signifint differenc between the two groups. Consistent wh rearch examg attus toward lbians and gay men outsi the sport doma (Lim 2002), lbian athlet have also been found to receive a greater gree of acceptance pared to gay athlet (Griff 1998; Jabson 2002; Pronger 1990) culture of sport tends to be pecially nservative, and most people wh equate male heterosexualy wh strength—and homosexualy wh weakns.
As a rult, gay athlet are often forced to nceal their sexualy, and siar to the lbian athlete, perform the heterosexual role. While no rearch has specifilly examed attus toward gay men across sport type (dividual, team), scholars have argued that gay men will have greater difficulty g out when on a team sport (pared to an dividual sport). In team sports, the bonds formed between athlet are so cril that g out wh any personal rmatn that would threaten to unrme or break those bonds is extremely risky for any gay athlete.

Moreover, rearch addrsg the homophobic nature of sport has also nsistently noted the pecially hostile atmosphere of men’s mastream team sports (i. Rearchers (both -and outsi sport) have found that the most extreme homophobia is often found among tightly-kn groups of men, who need both to ny any sexual ponent to their bondg and who n crease their solidary by turng vlently on mory groups/dividuals (i.

Also, men have been found to hold more negative attus toward gay men, pared to lbians (Lim 2002) has also been found that dividuals wh more negative attus toward gay men and lbians are (a) ls likely to have personal ntact wh dividuals that intify as gay or lbian (Herek and Capan 1996), (b) more likely to ri settgs which negative attus are the norm (Herek 1984), (c) more likely to be olr and ls well ted (Herek 1984), (d) more likely to subscribe to a nservative relig iology (Herek 1988), and (e) more likely to subscribe to tradnal attus toward sex rol (Hrichs and Rosenberg 2002). Rearch examg attus toward gay men and lbians among heterosexual llege stunts suggts that stunts the arts and social scienc hold more posive attus than stunts science and bs.

HypothThe specific rearch qutn examed this study was: what are self-intified heterosexual male and female stunt-athlet’ attus toward gay men and lbians across genr, sport and ntact? Based upon the extensive body of lerature examg heterosexuals’ attus toward gay men and lbians (outsi of sport), we formulated the followg three hypoth: (1) male stunt-athlet’ attus toward gay men and lbians will be more negative pared to female stunt-athlet (Lim 2002).
Also, male stunt-athlet’ attus will be more negative when evaluatg gay men than when evaluatg lbians (Lim 2002), (2) attus toward lbians and gay men will be more negative among men’s team sport participants (basketball, lacrosse, and soccer; Curry 1991, 1998; Kimmel and Msner 2001) pared to men’s dividual (swimmg/divg, track and field, tennis, golf), women’s team (crew, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, softball, field hockey, cheerleadg, basketball), and women’s dividual sport (swimmg/divg, track and field, tennis), and (3) ntact experienc (wh gay men and lbians) will be associated wh more posive attus toward lbians and gay men (Herek and Capan 1996).
