Havg nducted archival rearch on the Internatnal Gay Roo Associatn at the Autry Mm of the Amerin Wt, I was stck by the prer future of the associatn, the ep mment of s members, and the rary of public-facg projects engaged wh ral LGBTQ+ muni. Roos have been an tegral part of Amerin wboy culture sce the 1800s, however, wasn’t until the 1970s when gay roos began to form and challenge some of the assumptns about ‘wboys, ’ ‘sexualy, ’ and ‘masculy.

’ The purpose of this ethnographic study was to utilize participant-driven photo-elicatn (PDPE) method to unrstand how dividuals who participate gay roos experience their inti and the meangs they attribute to their participatn this queer subculture. The diverse imag shared by the participants illtrate their unique inti and the var meangs they attribute to their participatn gay roo. The fdgs om this study serve to highlight var aspects of the gay roo subculture and the role of gay roo as a se of support and solidary for LGBTQ muni.
In this study, gay roo emerg as a space of nttatn, ristance and reifitn of genr norms and heterosexualy. The fdgs ll to qutn tensns that exist when tryg to dismantle sexual mory stereotyp while simultaneoly perpetuatg whe hegemonic masculy through the pervasive image of the gay wboy.

Interrogatg the ways which gay roo participants simultaneoly rerced and challenged hegemonic masculy helps to unrstand how the ialized (hetero)sexual imag of wboys nnected to symbolic power, strength and self-worth, posn gay roo participants. This rearch study also reveals that participants of gay roo, who travel wh and across the USA orr to participate roo events, experiment wh multiple non-heterosexual inti as they search for spac and muni away om pulsory heterosexualy.
