“I’m always tryg to nnect wh stunts ways that I thk will expand their experience and give them opportuni to do some ol thgs, ” Gayl said. Although her rearch, which foc on accs, equy and succs higher tn wh a foc on barriers that stunt athlet, women and people of lor STEM fields face, has always been important, Gayl said she prriz placg equal emphasis on good teachg and advisg. When she was nomated for the Alumni Distguished Graduate Profsorship, Gayl said gave her an opportuny to reflect on the stunts she has worked wh over the years and what they have acplished sce graduatg om the program.

As Joy Gaston Gayl, a profsor of higher tn and senr advisor for advancg diversy, equy, and cln the NC State College of Edutn, took to the stage to give her first remarks as print of the Associatn for the Study of Higher Edutn (ASHE), she wanted her lleagu to unrstand that she se their humany as scholars and wants to honor and regnize , so they n e their rearch and scholarship to brg change to the world. Her sentiments echoed the 2022 printial theme, “Humanizg Higher Edutn, ” which, Gayl said, means that perhaps scholars mt shift their foc om a qutn of “What’s wrong wh people?

Gayl urged scholars to thk about what matters to people as the world begs to rebound om the trma of the COVID-19 panmic, upled wh ongog racism and social and polil divis. Gayl, who has served as an at-large member of the associatn’s Board of Directors sce 2018 and has been a member of the anizatn sce her time as a graduate stunt at The Oh State Universy, said she was surprised and honored when she was approached about nng for the print-elect posn.

Gayl will serve a three-year term, begng November 2020 as print-elect before beg print 2022 and immediate past print 2023. As print-elect, Gayl said that she hop to highlight and promote the work that scholars the field of higher tn are dog to addrs challeng postsendary tn and beyond and to build on iativ to support graduate stunts and early-reer faculty. In addn, as the world of higher tn grappl wh the ongog ronavis panmic and issu related to racial jtice, Gayl hop to seize the challeng as an opportuny for change.
