(As a mostly straight, middle-aged, ls-feme-every-mute cis woman, I don’t.) “There are no hard and fast l,” says Thera Carilli, -thor of <em>Lotg Queerns the Media</em>, who intifi as a butch lbian. Anyone n be butch, but for many people, ’s shorthand for a lbian wh a mascule-of-center appearance and a certa swagger.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">While there have always been butch women, they’ve rarely been visible the media, and certaly not a posive way. “Butch lbians really pose a threat,” says Carilli. If portrayed at all, they were often picted as silly sikicks, punchl, or crimals, and almost always paired wh femme women.</p><p data-no-id="11" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">But not on the new butch-centric shows. <em>Twenti</em>, <em>Feel Good</em> and <em>Work Progrs</em> share some monali. They have a metronome of romance pulsg through. The leads, as wh the women who created them, tend to sow nfn bathrooms — people sist they’re the wrong one — and wrtle wh problems like addictn, anxiety, and self-sabotage. In short: they’re three-dimensnal, plex and fully human — which is why they appeal to broad dienc. <br /></p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">“The characters have a sweetns and vulnerabily that draws you and mak you fet that the are the people you’re supposed to hate,” says Carilli.<br /></p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><em>Work Progrs</em> follows the show’s -creator and star, Abby McEnany, a self-scribed “fat, stgglg, queer dyke,” her qut for love and self-actualizatn. In the first episo alone, she accintally kills her therapist, profs to be suicidal, plays charas, and mak a date wh a much younger trans man. Mostly, they were fairly feme women, pavg the way for [parts of] Ameri to fd homosexual characters palatable, and seemed to keep straight dienc md. (The butcht women characters on <em>Glee</em>, Sue Sylvter and Coach Beiste, were straight, and eventually Beiste transned.)</p><p data-no-id="25" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It’s hard to know when we passed the tippg pot — or if we have — of butch visibily. DeGener' wildly popular daytime show put a sweet, dancg butch-ish lbian to middle-Amerin dienc, warmg some people to a versn of female masculy.</p><p data-no-id="26" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Then me <em>Orange Is the New Black </em> 2013, which buted a number of butch and mascule-of-center women, like Big Boo, played by Lea DeLaria, or Crazy Ey, played by Uzo Aduba. They were important, says Karen Tongson, chair of genr and sexualy studi at USC, bee they portrayed butch women as “beg sired, as opposed to beg ma fun or of ed as a sikick.” But they were still crimals, and weren’t leads.</p><p data-no-id="27" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">More butch voic joed the chos, pecially after Wahe’s 2017 Emmy for -wrg an episo of Netflix’s <em>Master of None</em>, which was based on her g out story. Genr exprsn and sexualy are always visible and yet seamls; the are g-of-age tal and romanc that break barriers part bee they handle their subjects and subject matter as normal, th munitg that the women — margalized most of history — are jt as normal as everybody else (that is, plited, screwed up, kd, weird). “They’re not prented as dramas of inty,” says Tongson. “They’re prented as a fact of inty.”</p><p data-no-id="31" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The revolutn, Tongson says, is not jt ont of the mera but behd as well.
