Co-leads <a href=" target="_blank">Oliver Sim</a> and Madley Croft are both gay, and there’s an argument to be ma for the xx providg a rare portra of queer timacy, though they prefer to see as universal. They sprg apart and stand to shake hands.</p><p>Tryg to discs the strint lyrics the lounge is a different matter, met mostly wh hant platus about <em>growth</em>. We briefly broach quarter-life cris and Saturn returns, which tradnally occur around their age: Smh is now 28, Sim and Madley Croft 27. Sim nods enthiastilly—jt yterday he was discsg the astrologil phenomenon wh his mum.</p><p>For him, wrg lyrics has been ls about observg, more “workg off actual thgs that have happened.” Like? “Reachg an age where beg the dnkt person the room isn’t charmg anymore.”</p><p>From the torturo procs of makg their send album, 2012’s uneven <a href="><em>Coexist</em></a>, the xx knew that they had to pe their fort zone for the follow-up. (“Our fort zone is a very small place,” says Madley Croft, perhaps unnecsarily.) They rerd that album a stud that Smh built behd a McDonald’s North London, and didn’t let anyone else hear until they had to. “There was so much prsure om ourselv about: What do people like about ? What mak sound like ? What do we need to hang onto?” says Sim. “When we’re thkg like that, at our worst, we n end up soundg a b like a parody of ourselv.” They abstaed om lettg themselv eat at McDonald’s until they pleted the album. Some reward.</p><p>This time around, they had a vague plan to rerd far-flung plac. In March 2014, they brought an amb rincy to Manhattan’s Park Avenue Armory. The were far om normal shows: Only 45 people attend each one, even though the hangar-like space uld hold hundreds more. “On the very last show we did, I looked up and saw Madonna starg at me a very long, fur-type at,” says Madley Croft wh disbelief. “I was tryg not to stare at her, like, <em>How am I supposed to perform? They all troduced each other to tons of mic: Fleetwood Mac’s <em>Tk</em> and <em>Rumours</em>, Heart’s “Magic Man,” Ace’s “How Long,” Arthur Rsell’s <em>First Thought, Bt Thought</em>, soft rock tws the Alsi Brothers, and primive guarist Robbie Basho.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>L.A. was about havg fun and brgg that feelg to the new rerd. But, as McDonald adms, “Perhaps parts of that trip went a ltle too far.” There was a lot of drkg and partyg. They rented a Hollywood mansn and worked on songs like Sim’s “Repli,” a sperate missive about tryg to break away om your own self-stctive history. They went to Miley Cys’ birthday party, and ved too many people back to their place afterwards. “There were a few arguments,” says McDonald. “It was the pot where we had to take a step back and remember that we were workg on an album.”</p><p>When that ssn was over, the band went their separate ways for a while. Madley Croft stayed behd L.A. to experiment the pop h factory, knowg the unfaiary would be horrible—but that was the pot. She wrote wh artists like Rhye’s Rob Hannibal and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedr. “I’ve been referencg the xx sonilly for three or four years wrg ssns,” says Tedr, who has worked wh nearly every morn pop star that matters, cludg Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. “And their ‘hntgns’ gets referenced at least every other ssn, whout qutn.”</p><p>Smh was by tourg and fishg <em>In Colour</em>. Sim stayed at home London and started to spiral. Sce we last met, the band ma their charmgly awkward but on “Saturday Night Live,” where they appeared alongsi Kristen Wiig, a shared hero, and tried not to smell her hair when they rerd promos for the show. In 2014, when he me home om tourg <em>Coexist</em>, he realized that he lacked some fundamental life skills, like schlg and self-re. “I was gog out a lot wh the exce that I was celebratg—‘celebratg’—the past few years.” He curls his fgers and rais his eyebrows. “Jt fightg the ia of beg an adult. Some iends had started to mellow a b, and I didn’t want to.” He feared rponsibily and acuntabily. “And wh alhol, like a lot of thgs, ’s all or nothg for me. So right now ’s jt nothg.” It’s been jt over a year sce his last drk.</p><p>The r pulls around the back of St. Pl’s Cathedral. “I was the <em>last</em> person to thk that I wasn’t drkg… succsfully,” he murs, speakg nsired agments. “Everyone had voiced their opns.” He listened. “But the problem was that I was, I suppose, distancg myself, so I thought, <em>How would they know</em>?”</p><p>I tell him that sounds pretty telltale.</p><p>“Yeah,” he says, his soft, South London accent droppg even lower. “That’s real telltale. Romy and Jamie nontg me penntly was… the last straw.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>He had also started to feel secure about his ntributn to the band. “Never md that I wasn’t leadg a very healthy liftyle,” he says, growg quieter. “The fact that I wasn’t beg creative h harr—and kiddg myself that I felt more creative wh a drk me.”</p><p>In the months between rerdg ssns, as his iends were workg on their own projects, he beme paranoid about their relatnships, based on his own terpretatns of texts and emails. “When you haven’t seen someone for a while, ’s so easy to project and make your own ias about what’s gog on,” he says. “I always feel like the two of them are a step ont of me nfince and matury. I worried that they were gog a slightly forward directn, and I wasn’t.”</p><p>He lghs at the suggtn that he seems like the most nfint member of the band, rellg an old story about Smh: As young teenagers walkg home om school, Smh once turned to Sim and said, “I’m at peace wh the fact that I’m not gog to make big wav the world.” Sim lghs at the memory. “I was like, ‘That is the most prsg thg I’ve ever heard. Which I’m still figurg out. I’ve got lots of help.”</p><p>There was no big renciliatn. Madley Croft and Smh me home to fish the album London early 2015. They had all worried about growg distant om one another but realized nothg had really changed between them—jt that after s of iendship, they still had to work at munitg. “I’ve noticed that you n save some of your harsht moments for the people you love,” Sim says. “I feel like wh me and Romy and Jamie—but pecially me and Romy— is <em>so easy</em> for feelgs to get hurt. Bee Romy knows exactly how to ph my buttons wh a short sentence, and likewise wh her.”</p><p><em>Coexist</em> closed wh “Our Song,” the xx’s love letter to each other. “All I have, I will give to you,” they sang, echog tradnal weddg vows. Knowg now how difficult the rerdg of that album was, the l sound like damage ntrol, glossg over a torrid suatn. Sim agre. In ntrast, <em>I See You</em> ends wh “Tt Me,” a song about the band that’s so btal, uld only have been wrten om solid foundatns.
