We had met at an event troducg queer women to each other to help them fd iends to go wh to the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Seoul Queer Culture Ftival</a>—the cy’s versn of Pri. There she had troduced me to several of her queer iends that she had grown up wh. She’s an out and proud lbian, and she had no reason to expect that I would fd her qutn unfortable at all.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Tthfully, my sexualy hadn’t been particularly important to me. I hadn’t taken datg very serly and I had never had a ser relatnship, so there had really been nothg to disclose to anyone about my sexualy. As a rult, I habed a kd of limaly between beg out and beg closeted. While I still don’t really re to be eher, most people still have expectatns. People assume that if someone is anythg other than cisgenr heterosexual, they need to announce that some way. </p><p>This was pecially te growg up the particular suburb of <a href=" target="_blank">Toronto</a> that I did. Outsi of my queerns, which is fairly accepted there, there were very few East Asians. People were kd to me, but their kdns often didn’t pare to the alienatn I felt. It wasn’t jt about race, but felt like everyone I knew had mon threads of culture and experienc that I would never be part of. That I physilly appeared different didn’t help. Even now, I don’t enjoy drawg attentn to myself and I don’t like makg any claratns. I would rather jt exist and let people thk what they want to thk. </p><p>Before I moved to Seoul—followg my graduatn om universy—I had never been to a lbian club. Their l are specifilly meant to keep out cisgenr heterosexual men, which also might keep out other members of the queer muny such as trans dividuals who intify differently om what sex they were assigned at birth. This means that almost everyone wh the walls of the clubs is a woman who is, some way, attracted to other women. Bee of that, gog to the clubs was somethg of a claratn. The spac are exclive and excludg, yet I was accepted them. </p><p>At Club Ace, I was illumated only by a glowg haze of flashg lights muted by a th layer of cigarette smoke. My long black hair was monplace, and the slightly darker tone of my sk was almost unnoticeable. I drsed tight skirts and tops that I bought the subterranean shoppg markets below <a href=" target="_blank">Gangnam</a>. My ey were dark as the night, as dark as everyone else’s. In Toronto there was always some way that I felt different. Here, I was an outsir some sens–a foreigner–but not one marked by difference race or my queerns. The anonymy that granted me was one that ma me feel ee. <a href=" target="_blank">I felt like I belonged</a>, even if was only the ver of darkns.</p><p>A few months later, I attend the Seoul Queer Culture Ftival. I had been to <a href=" target="_blank">Pri</a> once Toronto, but that was more of a show than anythg else. This, on the other hand, was a prott. We walked om Cy Hall to Gwanghwamun and back, thoands of , as unter-prottors on the oppose si of the street rried signs speakg of J and fay valu—hatred hidn behd kdns and guilt. It was everythg I had always avoid: a public claratn of somethg that ma me different—but this time I didn’t shy away. </p><p>Standg si by si wh women I knew om Club Ace and other plac like , I fally knew what was like to live as a queer dividual alongsi other queer dividuals. It wasn’t an isolatg act that kept wh the nf of a darkened club, but an affirmg one that rved out our right to belong a place where the sun touched our sk, illumatg s warmth.</p><div
