On the latt episo of the tvN drama "Prison Playbook", Hae-rong/Yoo Han-yang (Lee Kyu-hyung) nfsed that he is gay to to Je-hy (Park Hae-soo) and Joon-ho (Jung Kyung-ho). But Han-yang’s story is an even rarer se: he’s gay. Though this theme may be seen as a tentative approach to portrayg a homosexual relatnship, or even tiptoeg around the drama’s more tradnal Korean dienc, also giv the viewer room to hope and root for the uple to stay together.
One of my favore parts about this scene is the fact that the dialogue has nothg to do wh homosexualy. The scene simultaneoly navigat the difficulty of reprentg gay upl on the big screen and also renrs an artful pictn of their nervo begng. Prison Playbook admirably steered away om abg homosexualy as a punchle but I n’t help but notice the glarg difference treatment between s one sole gay romance pared to s other heterosexual romanc.
While the majory of the drama’s heterosexual reprentatns of romance flourished, homosexualy was never allowed to be happy for long. As the show’s only gay primary character, Han-yang is treated no differently om the others. This stands stark ntrast to far too many other K-dramas that tend to e homosexualy as a long-nng punchle.
