In the exceptn, Lease, Horne, and Noffsger-Frazier (2005) showed a sample of Whe LGBs currently volved anized fah groups that exposure to more affirmg settgs predicted lower ternalized homophobia; turn, lower ternalized homophobia predicted better mental health out. ’s (2005) fdg, suggtg that non-affirmg settgs may have a signifint effect promotg ternalized homophobia among LGBs (Wagner, Serafi, Rabk, & Remien, 1994; Harris, Cook, & Kashubeck-Wt, 2008; Herek et al., 2009) is reason to believe that the relatnship between relig affiliatn and ternalized homophobia among LGBs may vary by race and ethnicy bee religsy self vari across race and ethnic groups the U.

GAY: RELIGN

To the extent the race/ethnic patterns of relig attendance seen the general populatn also occur among LGBs, then Black and Lato LGBs would be more equently exposed to homophobic msag relig settgs than Wh bee of their greater level of affiliatn wh relig anizatns, and therefore would be subject to greater levels of ternalized homophobia than Whe LGBs.

GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT

As a tt of this specificy of the effect, we hypothize that attendance non-affirmg relig settgs will be related to ternalized homophobia but not to global also hypothize that Black and Lato LGBs will have greater attendance non-affirmg relig settgs pared wh Wh and, as a rult, Black and Lato LGBs will have higher levels of ternalized homophobia than Whe LGBs. We base our hypothis on mory strs theory, which suggts that a harmful social environment (non-affirmg settgs) will be related to greater strs exposure (ternalized homophobia), which, turn, will be related to adverse mental health out.

Prospective participants pleted brief screeng forms at the venu and were eligible if they were between 18–59 years old, had lived New York Cy for at least two years, self-intified as lbian, gay, or bisexual; Black, Lato, or Whe; and as male or female (which matched their genr at birth). For ease of reportg, we refer to the social inti listed here but participants did not have to intify g the inty labels: they may have ed any label that suggts the social inti, such as Ain Amerin, for Black, queer or same-genr lovg, for gay, etc. Items clu: “You have felt alienated om yourself bee of beg [lbian/gay/bisexual], ” “You have felt that beg [lbian/gay/bisexual] has allowed you to exprs a natural part of your sexual inty, ” and “You have wished that you uld velop more feelgs toward [the oppose sex].

Compared wh Wh, Blacks and Latos reported higher levels of religsy on every measure, and both racial/ethnic mory groups were more likely than Wh to affiliate wh non-affirmg relig settgs and to attend servic more equently the Table 2 we show the mean valu of race/ethnic groups, genrs, and relig exposure groups on ternalized homophobia. Blacks and Latos had higher ternalized homophobia than Wh (but this was statistilly signifint for Latos only), men had nearly intil levels wh women, and those affiliated wh non-affirmg relig settgs had higher levels of ternalized homophobia than those affiliated wh affirmg settgs and those who never attend at all.

RELIG AFFILIATN, INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA, AND MENTAL HEALTH LBIANS, GAY MEN, AND BISEXUALS

Among LGBs attendg non-affirmg settgs, those whose attendance equency was above the median had higher levels of ternalized homophobia than those below the median (but this difference was not statistilly signifint).
