Dpe Paragraph 175 and the failure of the WhK to w s repeal, homosexual and bisexual men and women experienced a certa amount of eedom Germany, particularly durg the Weimar perd, between the end of World War I and the Nazi seizure of power.

In the Uned Stat this greater visibily brought some backlash, particularly om the ernment and the police: the ernment often fired gay civil servants, the ary attempted to purge s ranks of gay soldiers (a policy enacted durg World War II), and police vice squads equently raid gay bars and arrted their patrons.

GAY: RELIGN

In the Uned Stat the first major male anizatn, found 1950–51 by Harry Hay Los Angel, was the Mattache Society (s name reputedly rived om a medieval French society of masked players, the Société Mattache, to reprent the public “maskg” of homosexualy), while the Dghters of Bilis (named after the Sapphic love poems of Pierre Louÿs, Chansons Bilis), found 1955 by Phyllis Lyon and Del Mart San Francis, was a leadg group for women. In Bra 1957 a missn chaired by Sir John Wolfenn issued a groundbreakg report (see Wolfenn Report) remendg that private homosexual liaisons between nsentg adults be removed om the doma of crimal law; a later the remendatn was implemented by Parliament the Sexual Offenc Act. In the 1970s and ’80s, gay polil anizatns proliferated, particularly the Uned Stat and Europe, and spread to other parts of the globe, though their relative size, strength, and succs—and toleratn by thori—varied signifintly.

Now headquartered Geneva and renamed the Internatnal Lbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Associatn (ILGA World), plays a signifint role ordatg ternatnal efforts to promote human rights and fight discrimatn agast LGBTQ and tersex persons. This support, along wh mpaigns by gay activists urgg gay men and women to “e out of the closet” (ed, the late 1980s, Natnal Comg Out Day was tablished, and is now celebrated on October 11 most untri), enuraged gay men and women to enter the polil arena as ndidat. At the lol and natnal levels, the number of openly gay policians creased dramatilly durg the 1990s and 2000s, and 2009 Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir beme prime mister of Iceland, which ma her the world’s first openly gay head of ernment.

In Ai, Asia, and Lat Ameri, openly gay policians have had only limed succs wng office; notable electns to natnal legislatur clud Patria Jiménez Flor Mexi (1997), Mike Waters South Ai (1999), and Clodovil Hernans Brazil (2006). Other issu of primary importance for the gay rights movement sce the 1970s clud batg the HIV/AIDS epimic and promotg disease preventn and fundg for rearch; lobbyg ernment for nondiscrimatory polici employment, hog, and other aspects of civil society; endg the ban on ary service for gay and lbian dividuals; expandg hate crim legislatn to clu protectns for gays, cludg transgenr dividuals; and securg marriage rights for same-sex upl (see same-sex marriage). Ary’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (1993–2011), which had permted gay and lbian dividuals to serve the ary if they did not disclose their sexual orientatn or engage homosexual activy; the repeal effectively end the ban on homosexuals the ary.

GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT

Although such fdgs are not variable across all dimensns of religsy and mental health out (Ano & Vasncell, 2005; Ellison, Boardman, Williams, & Jackson, 2001; Smh, McCullough, & Poll, 2003), the preponrance of the evince shows that multiple maniftatns of religsy have salutary effects on mental health, cludg ls prsn and psychologil distrs (Chatters et al., 2008; Ellison, 1995; Ellison & Flannelly, 2009; Hettler & Cohen, 1998; van Olphen et al., 2003; Ellison et al., 2001), and greater life satisfactn, personal happs, and psychologil well-beg (Ellison, 1991; Krse, 2004; Ellison et al., 2001; Wter, Stock, Okun, & Harg, 1985) is religsy associated wh better mental health out among lbians, gay men, and bisexuals (LGBs)? Ined, overg ternalized homophobia is an important velopmental task the g out procs that LGB dividuals unrgo and is seen by clicians as a necsary step toward achievg good mental health and well-beg (Eliason & Schope, 2007).

Internalized homophobia has been lked to a host of negative out, cludg anxiety, prsn, suicidal iatn, sexual risk-takg, problems timacy, and lower well-beg and overall self-teem (Frost & Meyer, 2009; Herek, Gillis, & Cogan, 2009; Herek & Glunt, 1995; Meyer, 1995; Meyer & Dean, 1998; Rowen & Mallm, 2002; Williamson, 2000) LGB people growg up non-affirmg relig settgs, relig teachgs n be an important part of their socializatn to antigay attus and stigma. In the exceptn, Lease, Horne, and Noffsger-Frazier (2005) showed a sample of Whe LGBs currently volved anized fah groups that exposure to more affirmg settgs predicted lower ternalized homophobia; turn, lower ternalized homophobia predicted better mental health out.

’s (2005) fdg, suggtg that non-affirmg settgs may have a signifint effect promotg ternalized homophobia among LGBs (Wagner, Serafi, Rabk, & Remien, 1994; Harris, Cook, & Kashubeck-Wt, 2008; Herek et al., 2009) is reason to believe that the relatnship between relig affiliatn and ternalized homophobia among LGBs may vary by race and ethnicy bee religsy self vari across race and ethnic groups the U. In fact, although evince clearly pots to greater religsy among Latos and Blacks pared wh Wh, evince also suggts Whe evangelil church provi the most homophobic worship settgs (Kubicek et al., 2009; Pew, 2007; Pew, 2008; Pew, 2010; Reimer & Park, 2001).

RELIG AFFILIATN, INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA, AND MENTAL HEALTH LBIANS, GAY MEN, AND BISEXUALS

To the extent the race/ethnic patterns of relig attendance seen the general populatn also occur among LGBs, then Black and Lato LGBs would be more equently exposed to homophobic msag relig settgs than Wh bee of their greater level of affiliatn wh relig anizatns, and therefore would be subject to greater levels of ternalized homophobia than Whe LGBs. As a tt of this specificy of the effect, we hypothize that attendance non-affirmg relig settgs will be related to ternalized homophobia but not to global also hypothize that Black and Lato LGBs will have greater attendance non-affirmg relig settgs pared wh Wh and, as a rult, Black and Lato LGBs will have higher levels of ternalized homophobia than Whe LGBs.

We base our hypothis on mory strs theory, which suggts that a harmful social environment (non-affirmg settgs) will be related to greater strs exposure (ternalized homophobia), which, turn, will be related to adverse mental health out.

Prospective participants pleted brief screeng forms at the venu and were eligible if they were between 18–59 years old, had lived New York Cy for at least two years, self-intified as lbian, gay, or bisexual; Black, Lato, or Whe; and as male or female (which matched their genr at birth). For ease of reportg, we refer to the social inti listed here but participants did not have to intify g the inty labels: they may have ed any label that suggts the social inti, such as Ain Amerin, for Black, queer or same-genr lovg, for gay, etc. Items clu: “You have felt alienated om yourself bee of beg [lbian/gay/bisexual], ” “You have felt that beg [lbian/gay/bisexual] has allowed you to exprs a natural part of your sexual inty, ” and “You have wished that you uld velop more feelgs toward [the oppose sex].
