Another challengg nsiratn was the social, enomic, and staable velopment of the Gay Head Lighthoe project. The Gay Head Cliffs and surroundg lands have a sacred anctral and signifint cultural importance to the Wampanoag Tribe.
After 2-1/2 days, the Gay Head Lighthoe was succsfully moved a distance of 129 feet away om the erodg cliff and onto s new foundatn, 12 days ahead of schle.
The Gay Head Cliffs and surroundg lands, which are owned by the native Wampanoag Tribe, did not experience any adverse damage durg the relotn. Perched atop strikg, multi-lored cliffs at the wtern end of Martha�s Veyard, Gay Head Lighthoe occupi a picture-perfect lotn. This name, however, failed to stick, and by the 1660s, the area beme monly known as Gay Head, due to the headland�s gaily-lored cliffs.

The area around Gay Head has been home to Wampanoag Indians for thoands of years, and to this day many lol rints are members of the tribe. In 1998, the town neart the lighthoe changed s name om Gay Head to Aqunah, which is Wampanoag for �end of the island.
The passage between Gay Head and the Elizabeth Islands to the wt is treachero for marime traffic due to the submerged obstctn lled Devil�s Bridge, which extends seaward om Gay Head. In 1796, a Massachetts State Senator asked for a lighthoe to protect the numero vsels passg through Veyard Sound, and 1798 Congrs approved $5, 750 to build a lighthoe at Gay Head.

The origal Gay Head Lighthoe, an octagonal woon tower built on a stone base, was acpanied by a woon keeper�s dwellg, a barn, and an oil storage buildg. Ebenezer Skiff, the first European to live the town of Gay Head, ma the gural lightg of the spir lamp si the tower�s lantern room on November 18, 1799.
After a few years at Gay Head, Keeper Skiff felt he mered a pay crease and penned the followg letter to Albert Gallat, Secretary of the Treasury. Early the neteenth century, the tower at Gay Head was lowered fourteen feet to rce the probabily of s light beg obscured fog. To be distguishable om fixed lights the area, the lightg apparat at Gay Head was a revolvg system of ten oil lamps each set a fourteen-ch reflector. In 1844, the tower was moved back om the edge of the erodg bluff about seventy-five feet, but the much-need new lighthoe and dwellg for Gay Head were not provid until after the formatn of the Lighthoe Board 1852. Jt as the untry started to ploy Frnel lens, $30, 000 for a new lighthoe featurg a first-orr lens was budgeted for Gay Head 1854. splendor equaled this trick of the magic lantern at Gay Head.
Crocker, who served at Gay Head om 1892 to 1920, had four of his children die a span of jt fifteen months.
