Perched atop strikg, multi-lored cliffs at the wtern end of Martha�s Veyard, Gay Head Lighthoe occupi a picture-perfect lotn. This name, however, failed to stick, and by the 1660s, the area beme monly known as Gay Head, due to the headland�s gaily-lored cliffs.

The area around Gay Head has been home to Wampanoag Indians for thoands of years, and to this day many lol rints are members of the tribe. In 1998, the town neart the lighthoe changed s name om Gay Head to Aqunah, which is Wampanoag for �end of the island. The passage between Gay Head and the Elizabeth Islands to the wt is treachero for marime traffic due to the submerged obstctn lled Devil�s Bridge, which extends seaward om Gay Head.

In 1796, a Massachetts State Senator asked for a lighthoe to protect the numero vsels passg through Veyard Sound, and 1798 Congrs approved $5, 750 to build a lighthoe at Gay Head.

The origal Gay Head Lighthoe, an octagonal woon tower built on a stone base, was acpanied by a woon keeper�s dwellg, a barn, and an oil storage buildg. Ebenezer Skiff, the first European to live the town of Gay Head, ma the gural lightg of the spir lamp si the tower�s lantern room on November 18, 1799.
