Johnson played a key role the uprisg that began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn New York’s Greenwich Village after police raid the gay bar and patrons fought back. “We were … throwg over rs and and screamg the middle of the street ‘e we were so upset ‘e they closed that place, ” Johnson told historian Eric Marc a 1989 terview that’s now been piled to an episo for the “Makg Gay History” podst.
