Like a actured reflectn a broken mirror, those who later sought to fd the “real” Jam Dean uld only piece together a distorted image om agments that never que f. Sudnly, teenage boys had both power and purpose and a liberatg role mol. And their parents’ generatn hated , not least bee they worried about their boys beg like him—sensive, unmanly, for queer. And they had the power to do somethg about .</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Warner Bros. ma mov to sanize Dean’s bgraphy, strippg away the problematic parts of his life, sandg off his anger and harr edg, and makg his rebel act a mody, one more acceptable to the parents of teens. A year after Dean died, Ballante Books missned a bgraphy of Dean om Bill Bast, who followed his publisher’s orrs whout needg to be asked and purged Dean’s life of anythg queer to protect the man he loved, even ath. That didn’t stop queer people om seeg Bast’s bgraphy and <em>Rebel</em> what obliv straight dienc uld not. The queer playwright W. Somerset Mgham read and unrstood, as did future gay activist Jack Frscher. “Jam Dean was mascule; he was blond; he was hot; he was California; he was Amerin; he was gay,” Fristcher relled of his teenage fatuatn. “I wanted Jam Dean. He plaed srnfully of the “sister” Dean’s “thwarted malens; girl-boy almost,” and mocked teenage boys for drsg and actg like their unmanly idol, all vany and narcissism and too much sensivy. They weren’t real men. Teenagers didn’t re, of urse. The old men sffed, but the young men saw a eer, ls nfg, more hont ia of masculy. At least for a while. But this was still the 20^th century, and as they grew olr, they grew ls radil.</p><p data-no-id="17" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"> In the mid-1970s, a quartet of bgraphi announced Dean’s sexual volvement wh other men. Lookg back, ’s easy to see how the straight boys who worshiped Dean, now middle-aged men, felt betrayed. They had moled themselv and their manhood on one of<em> those people. </em>Worse, after the Stonewall Rt signaled the start of the gay rights movement, openly queer men like culture crics Parker Tyler and Jack Babc claimed Dean as an in of gay liberatn. His picture hung gay bars. Gay magaz and newsletters discsed his sexualy, and San Francis’s first leather bar, Fe-Be’s, missned a statue of a biker that remoled Michelangelo’s David as a leather-clad Jam Dean. </p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Sudnly there was market for posthumoly punishg Dean for his betrayal of heterosexual manls. A generatn of wrers, both straight and gay, began claimg he was a sexual predator, a socpath, someone who should be shamed for his sex life, which they wrongly envisned creasgly baroque ways. Bgrapher Venable Herndon alleged that Dean had been a gay sex worker for whom no act was too gradg or too extreme. In <em>Hollywood Babylon II, </em>Kenh Anger picted him burng his flh wh cigarett durg what Anger scribed as sexual self-punishment. Jt five years ago, bgrapher Darw Porter improbably alleged Dean was the submissive a master-slave relatnship wh Marlon Brando that shad unfortably to abe. In his recent study of Dean’s movie <em>Giant, </em>the late Don Graham envisned Dean as a socpathic but aggrsively straight predator systematilly g sex to entrap powerful olr men. This summer, nis new novel <em>Wispread Panic</em>, agg <em>L. A. Confintial </em>thor Jam Ellroy still picted Dean as a villa, a sex worker and pornographer, an amoral androgyno sex fiend. “I’m really kd and gentle,” Dean once wrote.</p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">But no one reads books, not anymore. Few people have heard much about what’s them. Outsi of the LGBTQ+ muny and amia Jam Dean's sex life is still news, half a century late. Dean believed the power of image, and Hollywood and Madison Avenue have long sold a different Jam Dean to the public, the smolrg, straight stud ripped right om 1950s Warner Bros. publicy mpaigns. <em>That</em> Jam Dean, the one seen sweeps-week TV bpics and glossy mpaigns for brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Montblanc, has been rced for seven s to an image, a celluloid sat, silent and safe. To an extent was unrstandable. Advertisers and producers had often faced major backlash if they ed queer people to advertise to straight nsumers, and Jam Dean remas one of Ameri’s bt-paid ad celebri, still takg as much as $8.5 ln per year, acrdg to <em>Forb</em>’ recent annual rankgs. </p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The irony is that the image of Jam Dean the ol rebel was a purposeful performance, the photographs passg for the man as plete as the shards of bgraphy that mixed wh his film rol and passed for his life. The real, plited, secure, nerdy, queer person behd the image, however, remas dangeroly, shockgly morn, a twentieth-century man fightg to have a twenty-first century life.
