Bars, clubs, bathho and other gay spac only began ngregatg on Davie St the early 1980s. Like many young gay men and lbians at the time, Hann moved to Vanuver search of others like himself.
He soon settled the nearby, rintial Wt End, which was already emergg as Vanuver’s gay ghetto. In an age when homosexualy was barely legal and society ma no effort to disguise s disgt, those early gatherg spac gave him a place to openly nnect wh other gays and lbians, to velop a shared sense of inty, and to celebrate rather than hi his sexualy. To this day, Hann cherish the memori of “growg up as a gay person” those bars, clubs and bathho.
The unadorned black door ont of giv no ht of the historic gay space that once stood here. But 35 years ago, the cradle of Vanuver’s emergg gay muny, the Castle Pub stood on this spot, a gay gatherg place if ever there was one.
