It was a fire so horrific that Courtney Craighead, the church’s an (who was standg nearby), uldn’t even speak about his memori of the event. It was a fire set tentnally on June 24, 1973, rultg the ath of one-third of their Metropolan Communy Church (MCC) ngregatn at the time. This fire, which had happened twenty-two years and one day before, at a hangout lled the Up Stairs Lounge, remaed so disturbg a memory that never existed the pag of Amerin history. This tragedy, ngregants knew, was fact the only reason that the New Orleans Tim-Piyune had opted to send a reporter to hear their mister that Sunday. “We gather here this morng to remember,” Brecht ntued. “Rememberg, whether we like or not, is part of the human ndn. It is good as a way of acknowledgg our grief.”

It was a horrific scene to relate: a fire a by bar on the ge of New Orleans’s French Quarter that was set wh lighter fluid. On that eveng, flam had vad a sanctuary for blue-llar gay men. The fast-movg blaze overtook the send-floor bar wh ep ti to the MCC fahful, but the stctn would extend well beyond church membership, claimg the liv of thirty-one men and one woman.

Although raged out of ntrol for ls than twenty mut, the blaze left a fallout that shocked Carl Rab, the roner who would stggle to intify the bodi g jewelry and hotel room keys. Fgers and fac and bon were srched beyond regnn. “They were jt piled up,” he said. “People a mass. One falls, then another falls. It’s jt a mass of ath. It’s sickeng.”

Then the story went silent. After a mere blip of verage, fell off the ont pag of newspapers, and then om terr pag entirely. Lol and natnal televisn channels would dite jt a few mut of on-the-scene verage to the Up Stairs Lounge, which survivors were terviewed wh meras to their backs, due to reporters’ fear of legimizg the gay liftyle and victims’ fear of outg themselv. Yet, fact, the tragedy had affected nearly every segment of New Orleans’s closeted gay muny, timated a month later by the lol Gay People’s Coaln to be om 40,000 to 100,000 of the cy’s then 600,000 rints. Most of the ad—ted and illerate, young and old, whe and black, cludg a htler, a mister, and a ntist—perished wh the fire’s first 360 sends.

The Up Stairs Lounge, Brecht related to his flock, reprented a moment that exposed a majory of cizens as at bt apathetic toward homosexuals while also revealg that civil rights movements of the era were tone-af to homosexual plight. Ined, civil rights and femist nstuenci the 1970s did not leap to the fense of the Up Stairs Lounge victims. The tragedy was not noted Distaff, New Orleans’s femist magaze— was a time when lbians themselv were margalized om “mastream femists”—nor was there any mentn inic black newspapers like The Chigo Daily Defenr, spe there beg a black victim.

“This fire was a holot,” Brecht toned. “Perhaps not the lns like the forti, but surely jt as vastatg to the lbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-genred muny.” The immediate aftermath of this blaze—occurrg on the last day of celebratns markg the fourth anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rts—beme a chillg moment of loss for those gay Amerins who actually heard the story, who were long ndned to the realy that their sorrows were quaranted om the heterosexual Amerin dream. In a rtoon the Augt 1973 issue of The Advote, which was then a somewhat ragtag alternative newspaper Los Angel, a man a hospal bed was bandaged up like a mummy; the background, his chart read “Up Stairs Bar Fire Victim.”

Wh s physil and emotnal toll, the Up Stairs Lounge fire sat stark ntrast to the legendary rt that had taken place outsi of the Stonewall Inn New York Cy on June 28, 1969. On that day, homosexuals, transsexuals, and street kids had joed forc to rist New York Police Department officers who were raidg a gay bar and arrtg the patrons. This act of fiance had bee a wellsprg for gay polil recment.

In the wake of the Stonewall Rts, a new movement lled Gay Liberatn arose. It was a “radil thkg” and “ant” csa—acrdg to a newsletter distributed by the more nservative Homophile Actn League—whose stated goal was “plete sexual liberatn for all people” through the abolishment of stutns that forced homosexuals to “live two separate existenc.” Gay Liberatn was a parture om the so-lled homophile movement (the term rived om the Greek words homo and phile, meang “same love”), which had led the fight for homosexual rights up until then. Standg an oblique shadow of the Stonewall Rts, the Up Stairs Lounge fire would be a major tt of Gay Liberatn: Could the movement steward s people through a crisis? Would gay people regnize s right to lead?

Yet, as Dexter Brecht addrsed his ngregatn twenty-two years later, the Up Stairs Lounge remaed fotten.

Excerpted om the book Trbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberatn by Robert W.
