It starred Robert Ldsay and Richard Griffhs as a gay uple on the 'wrong' si of 'middle age'.
Followg the succs of Brish imports Sherlock and Downton Abbey, PBS will air Vic, a s focg on the long-term relatnship of two gay senr cizens, acrdg to reports om Deadle Hollywood. In addn to beg one of the few ss currently beg broadst that foc on a gay uple, was filmed ont of a stud Vic marks the first time McKellen and Jabi have appeared together on-screen, the two were both stunts at Cambridge Universy and part of the school's Marlowe Society.
IAN MCKELLEN'S "VIC" IS THE MOST REALISTIC GAY EDY WE'VE SEEN A LONG TIME
“Vic,” a Brish seri soon to be broadst on PBS, follows two partners a gay relatnship of nearly 50 years. * jacobi gay comedy *
PBS's new edy livers a certa kd of wry gay humor that is too srce on TV. Ined, the seri is perfectly timed, premierg as did when New York and London were holdg their gay pri celebratns -- 's a project that nnects the viewer to a streak of gay humor that has all but died out the TV world.
OH YOU SILLY THG, OF COURSE HE’S GAY
Two of the all-time Brish actg greats – and two of my personal favor, generally – are jog forc a new edy s for ITV. Legends Sir Ian McKellen (The Hobb, The Lord of the Rgs, X-Men) and Sir Derek Jabi (I, Cldi, Cadfael, Doctor Who) are teamg up to star gay edy Vic, a six-part seri wrten by former Fay Guy and Will & Grace producer Gary Jati. Formerly tled Vic Old Queens (a tle that I admtedly loved to piec and wish that they’d kept), the s will feature McKellen and Jabi as an elrly gay uple who have lived together the same Covent Garn apartment for nearly fifty years. Long retired, the duo spends most of their time on borg arguments and petty bickerg (and, one mt assume, jt beg generally awome.) Franc De La Tour (Risg Damp, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) will play their bt iend Vlet. Plot tails are fairly sketchy at the moment, but apparently the liv of Freddie (McKellen) and Stuart (Jabi) will be turned upsi down by the arrival of their new upstairs neighbor, Ash. Jt to give you a ht at my excement level about this: Vic is now basilly my most anticipated seri for next year, barrg only the third season of Sherlock. There is simply no way that this isn’t gog to be brilliant, wh this kd of talent attached. Both McKellen and Jabi are simply fantastic actors and one has to assume that gettg them both agree to do a TV seri (short a season as is) is a pretty huge up for ITV. The existence of this s at all is also a pretty bold choice for the work, spe the star power attached. While ITV soap operas Coronatn Street and Emmerdale have both featured gay characters, greenlightg a show wh gay leads is pretty rare. A s such as this isn’t entirely groundbreakg, but ’s certaly unmon and the work is jtifiably proud of . "ITV is thrilled this excg and bold s, wh stellar performers and wrg talent is to jo the creasg slate of new look edy shows on the channel," said Myfanwy Moore, ITV edy missng edor. Both McKellen and Jabi are openly gay themselv and both have lived wh long-term partners for years. McKellen himself has stated that his orientatn has helped him be a better actor, bee he spent years “pretendg to be someone else.” It will be tertg to see how much the actors own personal stori end up lorg their performanc. There’s ltle to go on out there that might dite what sort of edy Vic will turn out to be – the prs release lls “wicked,” but will fall the dry and bg tellectual mp or lean more toward the mpy si? Will be an average suatnal edy or more of a drama hybrid? We simply don’t know yet, but ’s hard to image that two actors of this liber would have signed on if they weren’t nfint of s likely qualy. No word on when Vic will film, but ter mors suggt an airdate at some pot late 2013. Countdown clock: on. * jacobi gay comedy *
McKellen plays Freddie, half of an agg gay uple; he and his mon-law hband, Stuart, played by the great Derek Jabi, aren't perpetually fightg, exactly, bee that impli some sort of heat.
TV hasn't been very good at pictg gay relatnships, for whatever reason -- and "Vic, " though hardly an ial, feels at least specific enough to be real. Compare the sharp, wty squabbl, rooted the characters' ep faiary wh one another, wh the ee-floatg exasperatn between Cameron and Mchell, the "Morn Fay" gay uple who always seem to have met one another two hours ago.
A ‘VIC’ CIRCLE OF GAY STEREOTYP
And yet an era durg which gay people feel more and more distguishable om straight people, particularly on televisn, there's somethg worthwhile about a show whose sensibily is so rooted the way a certa streak of gay men talk to one another and how they relate to the world.
JAB IS GAY
The men at the center of "Vic" hate one another slightly ls than they hate the rt of the world, a way that feels very specific to their era; the show, wh s sharp humor, mak the bt of the tough liv a generatn of gay men led, and is a valuable ttament for younger gay men who have grown up thkg that to be gay is jt the same as anyone else's experience. Jabi (“I, Cldi”) as two fsy, fdg partners a gay relatnship of nearly 50 years.
“Vic” was succsful enough to earn a send season, but was also cricized by Brish publitns like The Stage, which said that s “gay characters are nothg more than mp stereotyp” and that the scenars “bear no remblance to the liv of the viewers at home, ” while The Guardian wrote that the seri “cheerfully tras clichés of homosexualy.
” As “Vic” arriv the Uned Stat, the bate over s pictns of gay men reopens an argument that has nonted Amerin edi like “Will & Grace, ” “Glee, ” “Morn Fay” and other shows wh gay a televisn character who exhibs stereotypilly gay quali a stereotype himself?
