But I had an uncle who was an alholic and smoked pot. All I remember about my uncle is that he was bad news. At fay get-togethers, there was always unrlyg nversatn about him. No one ever me out and said , but I knew he was really msed up. Pl, this was the 1980s. Whenever I wanted dgs, they were there. So I gave ke a shot, sce I thought the pot was workg out so well for me. And the e was even better— ma me feel alive, energetic, exced. I started bgeg: I'd stay up all night dog e, ncel days of work, and spend all the money I had on more e. But after a day or two of this, a voice my head told me I need to sleep and eat. Maybe bee I was the bety dtry, and I knew I had to mata a certa level of health, after a few days of bgeg, I'd stop. I also thought of my uncle, and sred me. I would stop g e for four or five months at a time, but then I'd go back to .</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Durg that time, I didn't do at work, but I uld feel my system the next day. I'd ll a "der." I have a hyperactive personaly, so I uld hi . I ran around the chair while I was cuttg hair, and my clients thought I had a big personaly and was high-energy. It was my way of distractg everyone. I would jt play up and let people thk, Oh, that's jt Chris.</p><p>Meanwhile, my reer was takg off. The e gave me a fearls, go-for- attu, and worked. I took risks I would never have taken at that time if I'd been sober. I would cut bangs, choppy layers—sometim I'd cut all their hair off pletely. The irony is that this kd of attu is an asset hairstylg. I uld never say dgs helped me, but the attu I had at the time helped make me succsful.</p><p>At this pot, the le between beg sober and gettg high blurred. I was g e when I wasn't workg, and I was smokg pot every day. Dog e ma me anx, so I always had alhol the reigerator to ntralize . I didn't realize at the time, but alhol played a huge part my dg addictn. When the party was over, I would start drkg whatever was around to e down. I ually kept a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor, bee got me dnk faster. I wasn't a glamoro drker. Sometim I would put out my cigarett a bottle of malt liquor to make myself stop drkg , but then—and this is so awful to thk about—later the night, I'd drk , wh the cigarette ash . I don't know how much e I was g one night, but if I had $100, I'd spend $90 on e, $8 on liquor, and $2 on ramen noodl. I wasn't stoned durg the shoot, but this was durg a time when dgs were a big part of my life. Christian Slater's publicist thought I was good wh hair and troduced me to Courteney Cox. Courteney had jt done <em>Ace Ventura: Pet Detective</em> and had a bad haircut—so they lled me . She was workg on the pilot for <em>Friends,</em> and we h off. At the same time, I was workg wh Patricia Arquette, whose manager was also reprentg a new actrs named Jennifer Aniston. The manager remend that Jennifer e to the salon where I was workg. I cut Jennifer's hair for the <em>Friends</em> pilot, and the next thg I knew, the show was takg off, magaz were referrg to my haircut as "The Rachel," and <em>People</em> was llg me for an terview. And I really don't thk anyone knew I was g the whole time.</p><p>Durg this explosn my reer, I was load nstantly—although I still didn't do e at work. I was gettg all this attentn, but I didn't thk I was dog anythg special. I was jt dog hair—that's my job—and wasn't hard to do. I started feelg pretty bad about myself, bee I felt like I had all this unserved attentn. The dgs were makg me feel terrible about myself, so I did more dgs to feel better, which obvly didn't work. I never nsired myself a dg addict, though, and I didn't hang out wh other addicts. To me, dg addicts were gross. I was still hangg out wh my regular iends, and on some nights, the iends would e wh me. The difference was that I was g all the time, and they weren't.</p><p>I never blacked out, but the dgs started beg more important than the work. Soon I wasn't showg up for jobs. I was booked to do a Maxwell vio wh the director Matthew Rolston, which I missed, and a Lee Jeans ad mpaign wh Sarah Michelle Gellar, which I didn't show up for. I was too by stayg up all night dog dgs. I never fot about shoots, but g was more important than workg. I n't expla , really, bee 's hard to unrstand if you're not an addict, but was all that really mattered to me. Afterward, I went home and watched the Osrs on televisn, and as I was watchg Helen w her award and look so betiful, I was stg on my uch, smokg crack. I saw what I was dog to myself, and I thought of my uncle, and really sred me. I moved , and wh a week, a iend of me who knew I was sober asked me to e over and pick up some beer on the way to dner. So that night, I was drkg, and wh a week, I was dog e aga. It was a Thursday, about noon, and I was gettg my r washed. I'd chosen the r wash bee was a block om my aler. I went to a 7-Eleven, pulled money out of the ATM, and went to buy dgs. I uldn't wa until I got home, as I normally did. I got my r, took a h of crack, and as I exhaled, I looked my rearview mirror, and there was an unrver police r behd me wh his lights flashg. Two ps got out of the r, and as they were walkg over, I floored . I evad the police and a helipter for almost ten mut on a high-speed chase through downtown Los Angel. I drove through a fence and land on someone's ont porch. Then I actually got out of my r and took off on foot. They ught me, and for the first time, I was arrted.</p><p>Stg the back of a police r—stoned, weighg 140 pounds—I realized, hontly, for the first time, that I was a dg addict, not some fabulo Hollywood hairstylist. I went to jail that day, and was awful. Beg a gay man the L.A. County Jail is sry enough, but beg a gay man a dorm wh 145 crimals was the worst thg I've ever been through. I was only there for six days, but was the srit six days of my life. When I left jail—released on my own regnizance—I was willg to do whatever took to get sober. The urt sent me back to Liberty Hoe, and if I got arrted aga, I would go to prison. Not the L.A. It was such a blsg to fd out that I had such real iends, pecially a town and an dtry that n seem so full of sh. It reassured me that the world is good, and I was worth more than the hairstyl I uld create. I had ed the dgs to make me feel better about myself, but no dg addict has high self-teem. You only feel better about yourself when you stop g.</p><p>The people at the Liberty Hoe put rtrictns on me. If I saw a billboard or an ad or a movie wh hair that I had done, I wasn't allowed to say anythg about . I uldn't seek praise om other people. When I was g, I was fdg credibily through my work, but now that I was sober, I had to learn to value myself as a person.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>One day, Jennifer me to see me at a salon where I had started workg and told me she was gettg married. We had always talked about me dog her hair for her weddg. So when the time me for her to ask, I said y. I wasn't nervo. I felt ready. The first eback job I got was a high-profile celebry one—the biggt I'd ever had. I was right back the game, and I didn't have to start at the bottom. It felt like a gift.</p><p>I brought a sober iend along, and when I got back to Liberty Hoe after the weddg, I had to scb down the bathrooms. The ia was to teach me huy. It was very effective.</p><p>I've been sober sce October 14, 1999, and I've never spoken publicly about this before. This is dangero for me. I asked myself, What if this article out, and I've relapsed? What if I'm full of crap? Nothg is more important to me than my sobriety. It's why I have a job and, probably, a life. I cid to speak publicly bee there's someone else out there wh a problem, and maybe this will help him or her.</p><p>There was a time when I was g crack that I didn't thk I was gog to make .
