kd of people who always go on about whether a thg is good taste variably have very bad taste,” the playwright Joe Orton once wrote. That motto might be stched to the silk pillowse of the TV creator Ryan Murphy, whose taste is lled to qutn nearly every week. The provotr behd Fox’s teen mil “Glee,” FX’s bloody melodrama “Amerin Horror Story,” and NBC’s gay-parent s “The New Normal,” Murphy currently overse (along wh his creative partner, Brad Falch) three shows three genr on three works. He has two more the works. He’s also directg a movie versn of Larry Kramer’s play “The Normal Heart.”<a href="#edorsnote">*</a> Dpe Murphy’s productivy, solid ratgs, and startlg abily to negotiate wh personali as prickly as Kramer, he’s never received the godlike worship that other TV trs are acrd. By this, I mean men like Louis C.K., Joss Whedon, Vce Gilligan, Dan Harmon, and the HBO Davids—Simon, Chase, and Milch. (Wh few exceptns, women get a more skeptil receptn.) The shownners may be inoclasts, but they’ve got gravas. They wear leather jackets and owns, or geeky T-shirts and an air of telligent melancholy.</p><p class="paywall">Murphy, who is openly gay, has an acerbic air, but ’s more the manner of a gimlet-eyed talent-show judge (a role he played last year, on his realy-TV spoff, “The Glee Project”). From the perspective of crics and fans alike, Murphy is an irrant, like yenne pepper: he gets all exced and then, a season or two , we’re screamg and gulpg down ice water and llg for the waer. For years, he’s been notor for nstctg fabulo pilots, then drivg his ventns off a cliff. Characters get assassated, lerally and figuratively. Sly wks bee grand-mal seizur. As anyone who watched the recent dis episo of “Glee,” or Season 6 of “Nip/Tuck”—also a Murphy creatn—n attt, this is not an entirely unfair rap. But Murphy is also a pneer and a radil, worthy of our rpect if not precisely our tst: he ph the lims of televisn ways as excg as anyone up on that Mt. Rhmore of TV. His shows—which by now form a distct portfol—need to be nsired their logil amework. That ntext is not Shakpeare, or Dickens, or even Srse, but mp. Realism means ltle to Murphy; thenticy, ls; subtlety, almost nothg. In September, characters on “Glee” took to “hate-watchg” David Simon’s “Treme,” and although I’m fond of that seri, I lghed out loud. There’s plenty to be said for bety and digny. But ugly and brazen have their mers, too.</p><p class="paywall">In 1964, San Sontag, her say “Not on ‘Camp,’ ” scribed as “a solvent of moraly,” and that phrase hts at what is appealg about Murphy’s shows: his Tourettic impulse to offend, even the midst of the sweett love story. Camp origated as a private language, an era when survival as a gay man meant learng to break s—of male and female behavr, of normaly and stat. Murphy has taken this vernacular of the closet, and bent , hard, toward an era of outns. It’s a mighty queer gamb, and one that aligns Murphy wh a subset of gay shownners whom I’ve rarely seen lumped together cril nversatn, perhaps for fear of riskg offense.</p><p class="paywall">Among the is Alan Ball, who created “Six Feet Unr” (the drama that produced David Fisher, the first tly plex gay male character on TV) and “Te Blood” (wh s dicey vampirism-as-gay-rights metaphor). There’s also Kev Williamson, the creator of “Dawson’s Creek” and the new horror show “The Followg,” and the executive producer of “The Vampire Diari”; “Dperate Hoewiv” ’s Marc Cherry, who named every episo for a Sondheim reference; and Michael Patrick Kg, the man behd both the exquisely mpy “Sex and the Cy” and the execrably mpy “2 Broke Girls.” In addn, there’s Silv Horta, the creator of ABC’s sweet <em>telenovela</em> adaptatn “Ugly Betty,” an unrrated edy-drama that managed to celebrate both Queens and queens.</p><p class="paywall">Like several of the shownners, Murphy lov divas and zgers. But he stands out for his aggrsive attempts to punch right through TV’s lazier habs, stchg genr together like a mad scientist. Murphy’s ft set piec evoke Charl Bch and Bertolt Brecht as well as Lady Bunny, theatril figur willg to risk the ridiculo for a shot at the transcennt. If this approach ocsnally rults episos that remble the bat-wged pig fet om “Amerin Horror Story” ’s experimental lab, so what? Shock has value, too: wak up.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">I first disvered Ryan Murphy 1999, when he created WB’s crass and lir “Popular.” This was back the era of “Freaks and Geeks” and “My So-Called Life,” teen dramas that transformed TV wh their emotnal realism. “Popular” was set a high school, too, but had zero tert nuance. Instead, prented femy as a rollg tfight, years before the rise of the “Hoewiv.” “Popular” also had a knowg surrealism, sharp sights to bety and power, and outrageo characters, like Mary Cherry (Llie Grossman), a cheerlear right out of a John Waters film, who was prone to growlg phras like “Shut your dirty whore mouth.” Even before abandoned herence, Season 2, “Popular” jected drag athetics to mastream televisn like filler to skny lips. Its specialty was eak-sized emotns—rage, envy, glory—too big to be ntaed by a subtler genre; classic mp style, found ugls bety, as well as vice versa.</p><p class="paywall">The same was te for Murphy’s next show, the plastic-surgery melodrama “Nip/Tuck,” which, startg 2003, ran for six seasons on FX and end by alienatg practilly all s fans. The show’s baroque plot rivalled that of “Flowers the Attic”: s Wikipedia pag are a s of plots like “the three of them create a signature face cream ma of semen which they market to Joan Rivers” and “Julia starts an affair wh Conor’s dwarf nanny.” Viewers should have been warned by the pilot, which was practilly a metonym for the typil Murphy seri. It opened wh a hioly graphic sequence of a butt implant—a thumb the eye of anyone who thought he’d be watchg pretty people Miami. Durg the next forty mut, the show sketched a smart love triangle among two surgeons—one a moralist, one a womanizer—and the moralist’s wife. It hted at the potential for a sbro vtigatn of our culture’s obssn wh perfectn, and then, by Act IV, went full-bore outlandish, wh liposuctn fat sprayg everywhere, rps eaten by alligators, and a torture scene which a nu surgeon is stabbed wh his own Botox needl.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Neher “Popular” nor “Nip/Tuck” reached a mass dience, although “Nip/Tuck” was a h for FX. Murphy’s breakthrough me 2009, wh “Glee,” a signifintly sweeter nctn. The show’s timg was impecble: addn to harnsg the phenomenon of “Amerin Idol,” “Glee” beme a stagg ground for gay rights and the anti-bullyg movement. The pilot pneered the scripted TV mil, flectg old-fashned “let’s put on a show” plots wh pure Murphy madns—football players dog Beyoncé danc, pkie-lkg lbian cheerlears, episos voted to “Rocky Horror” and Madonna. If “Popular” was mp for teens, “Glee” add a ccial element: the stylized force of Broadway mils, where hidn sir uld burst out song.</p><p class="paywall">William McKley High School, the show’s backdrop, was based on Murphy’s own high school, Indiana, where he’d grown up as a sharp-tongued, ostracized fashn queen. The characters clost to his heart were Kurt (the wonrful Chris Colfer), whose clear soprano voice shattered the bigotry around him like a champagne glass, and his bt iend, the Jewish diva Rachel, a Barbra-worshippg ugly ducklg wh a csh on a popular jock. By 2009, Kurt wasn’t the only gay teen on TV; there were siar characters on “Ugly Betty” and “Uned Stat of Tara.” But, “Glee” ’s early episos, Murphy ptured somethg potent: the baby queen’s blend of self-py and self-assertn, wh wounds ma to weapons. It’s hard to tell, sce he’s a black leather gimp su. “You really want to go for round two?” she says, a nervo voice. “C’mon, I n be kky.” What follows might be scribed as quasi-nsensual gimp-rape, wh Brton starg to vilish eyehol, the mera swoopg voyristic light. The scene felt like a valente to seventi horror films, those juicy, unpretent slic of psychosexual pulp, which drew ltle divisn between fantasy and fear. Like mp, they were somehow at once misogynist and femist, a tacky athetic wh a special potency, perfect for explorg taboo them about feme strength and vulnerabily.</p><p class="paywall">The first season of “Amerin Horror Story” played, at s bt, like the anx fever dream of a woman approachg menopse. Betrayed by her hband, Brton gets knocked up by the Devil, and her agg body be the show’s hnted hoe, prey to asslt and vasn, tormented by ghosts of tabloid murrs past and prent. Meanwhile, her teen-age dghter is sced by a ghost, then be one. In the show’s most remarkable performance, Jsi Lange swans about as Constance Langdon, an inic Murphy diva—she’s an elrly bigot and a glamoro tthteller, as well as the mother of monsters. One son was a mass murrer; another was a geic anomaly. Langdon’s dghter has Down syndrome, a circumstance treated wh Murphy’s tramark blend of shock and pathos. Lange is back, as another tormented tormentor: Sister Ju, a nun wh a workg-class Boston accent and a selectn of ridg crops. She’s termed to force “productivy, prayer, and purifitn” on her patients, but she’s also a woman wh a past and, her way, an pennt md. There’s also Chloë Sevigny as a nymphomaniac, Lily Rabe as a novice nun, Sarah Plson as a lbian vtigative journalist, and Jam Cromwell as a scientific sadist named Dr. Arn. It all njur “Dark Shadows”—the gothic soap that Murphy watched as a child—and the great pre-gay-rights pulp lbian novels, paperbacks wh tl like “Odd Girl Out,” which drew no bright le between polics and pornography.</p><p class="paywall">On adult ble, Murphy and his wrers liver dialogue that mak you gasp and giggle. A kky psychiatrist mands of a terrified hooker, “Slowly. Show me your mossy bank.” When a posssed farm boy tnts Lange’s nun, he sneers, drawg the words out like Snily Whiplash, “It driv you cra-a-azy. To be the smartt person the room, wh no real pow-w-wer. Bee of that smelly clam between your legs.” When the good Dr. Thredson—played by Zachary Quto, like Plson an openly gay actor—arriv at the asylum, he’s astonished. “Your hospal still admisters electroshock to homosexualy; ’s barbaric,” he claims prissily. “Behavr modifitn is the current standard.” Lange purs her lips and shoots back, “Tomato, tomahto.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“Amerin Horror Story” revels live-wire bat, like fah vers science. In a standout episo, the asylum hosts a movie night, which tak on a self-referential feel. “We’re all gog to be together the dark, watchg ‘The Sign of the Cross,’ a movie full of fire, sex, and the ath of Christians,” a nun, who happens to be posssed by Satan, purrs. “What <em>fun</em>.” Then Sister Ju, who is dnk on Communn we, troduc the film, makg reference to “the parable Mr. Charl Lghton, who I unrstand is an enormo whoopsie.” This sps, somehow, to a spoken-word rendn of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” It’s pure mp, and also que movg, and unlike anythg else on TV.</p><p class="paywall">Lovg a Ryan Murphy show don’t always mean enjoyg . Parts of “Amerin Horror Story” make me ill or angry; other parts turn me on, or make me lgh, a way that may not be tentnal—though, as wh “Louie,” the show’s nsistency n’t be unstuck om s appeal. But by the time end I was nvced that “Asylum” might be Murphy’s masterpiece: radil art that aims for the body as well as for the md.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">I’d love if this were also te of “The New Normal,” Murphy’s first work edy, particularly sce he clearly tends for the show to have an impact, both as polics and as gay reprentatn. As wh “Amerin Horror Story,” he’s drawn his spiratn om the seventi—this time om abrasive polil ss, like “All the Fay.” Norman Lear is his hero, he has told crics.</p><p class="paywall">Like “Glee,” “The New Normal” featur a character based on Murphy: Bryan (Andrew Rannells), the creator of a TV show lled “Sg.” Jt Bartha plays his partner, David, a sweet doctor. Geia Kg is Goldie, the Midwtern girl who be their birth surrogate; Bebe Wood is her eccentric child. Strange is better than dull. But, while I try not to judge ss before the first six episos have aired—they’re the burnt-on-the-outsi trial panke of edy—so far “The New Normal” works mostly theory. As game as Bark is, Nana’s abrasivens feels ntrived. Worse, the show’s air of rich-whe-gay-guy L.A. privilege curdl punch l that might play “Glee” ’s more most Lima, Oh. Last year, Michael Patrick Kg fend “2 Broke Girls” agast accatns of racism by sayg that, as a gay man, he was ee to be an equal-opportuny offenr. It’s an exce that don’t hold up, and “The New Normal” has some siar cel-queen tennci, and whout the amelratg factor of “Glee” ’s mil numbers.</p><p class="paywall">Some bs do pay off, like Wood’s imatn of the “Grey Garns” mp in Ltle Edie. There was a melancholic force to the episo when Nana had her first asm. Yet, Episo 7, when Bryan go to church to fd a godfather for his unborn child, a promisg bate jt fizzl. “Oh, the Pope. Come on,” the prit sffs. “Haven’t you ever had a lovable old uncle who popped off tolerant ments at a fay barbecue?” The rolutn to the uple’s search for spirual guidance ma me wce: Rocky, already a TV stereotype as Bryan’s sassy black helpmeet, was selected as the unborn child’s wise godparent, another cliché. There was even a wry remark about Maya Angelou, as if acknowledgg a cliché were the same as fangg .</p><p class="paywall">It’s hard to say why Murphy’s shows are so nsistent: TV is a llaborative art form, after all, wh Murphy’s wild ias mixed wh those of Falch and other wrers. But his nsistency is a price worth payg. Like polil activism, televisn needs s radils, as well as those who work wh the system. Asked by <em>Vogue</em> about his admiratn for Larry Kramer, Murphy said that he intified wh “that sweet, necsary ncept of prott and anarchy.” A show like “Amerin Horror Story” may breach the borrs of what others nsir good taste, but burns a path to somethg wilr. “The New Normal” is a misfire, but at least ’s not a borg one. And “Glee”? Oh, “Glee” is a royal ms. But I am still watchg “Glee.” I will always be watchg “Glee,” even as I judge and judge.
