But they don’t always make out to the wtern end of the island to see the historic Gay Head Light and glowg red clay cliffs.</p><p class="">Even if they did, they might not know the Aqunah Wampanoag tribe has lived on the land for more than 10,000 years. But now people om the tribe and the town of Aqunah are workg together to tell that story — and to boost the lol enomy — wh a new, state-signated "cultural district."</p><p class="">A recent vis reveals what they’ve been dog, and why.</p><p class=""><strong>'A Very Unique Story'</strong></p><p class="">On a clear day you n see the Elizabeth Islands om the dramatic Gay Head Cliffs.</p><p class="">Anne-Lre Franis, a profsor of Amerin history France, took a b om the ferry about 17 away after readg onle about the stunng natnal historic landmark. She's taken by views, but she's even more exced by what she learns om a sign on the lookout’s edge.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I didn’t know, for example, that this was Native-Amerin land and that all the shops the area are owned by the tribe,” Franis says. “That’s pretty imprsive.”</p><p class="">The Aqunah Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head owns nearly 500 acr of the land the area.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We’re still out here, you know. There’s not too many trib that are here the state,” tribe planner Durwood Vanrhoop says, squtg the bright sun. “It’s one of survival and termatn. It’s a very unique story.”</p><p class="">Vanrhoop says his tribe’s narrative starts where we’re standg, wh the legend of a giant Indian known as Moshup. Wampanoag men once hunted whal off the shor, too.</p><p class="">Vanrhoop says oral tradns like the tale of Moshup nnect tribal members to their land.</p><p class="">Then he tak down the sandy path toward a clter of bs on the bluffs. He's known this place his whole life.</p><p class="nt-medium">“From the lookout there’s the Aqunah Shop Rtrant, which is a fay-n place owned by some of my brothers and other fay that’s been here for s,” Vanrhoop says. "And there are also about seven or eight other shops.”</p><p class="">Tourists n fd T-shirts, lol art and Wampum jewelry ma om Quahog shells. A new addn is the Orange Peel Bakery, which is owned by Vanrhoop’s sister.</p><p class="">There's also a small, morn shed wh bark sidg lled the Herage Ksk. From outsi you n hear the rhythmic thumpg of dms piped through speakers. Insi you also fd tradnal tools, stacks of firewood, a large map of Martha’s Veyard and a brief wre-up of the tribe’s history Aqunah (which translat to “Place at the End of the Island”).</p><p class=""><strong>Seekg To Attract More Tourists</strong></p><p class="">Up until a few s ago, Vanrhoop says, fishg and agriculture provid livelihoods for the tribe. Now ’s all about tourism. But turns out that enomic driver is actually nothg new.</p><p class="nt-medium">“It’s been gog on much longer than people might spect,” says Richard Skidmore, who's been keeper of Gay Head Light sce 1990.</p><p class="">Durg a tour of the lighthoe, Skidmore shows me a photo, om the late-1800s, of tourists who traveled here by steamship.</p><p class="nt-medium">“This particular picture is of the dock that no longer exists, and an oxrt wh some fancy-drsed people — and then a Wampanoag fellow who’s gog to lead them right up to where we are right now, the Gay Head Light,” he scrib.</p><p class="">Skidmore says the nativ were an attractn, but they were also savvy bs people. They owned ns and rtrants. Then Skidmore quot a sell-le om a brochure of the time: “Come vis a village of red men — meang the Wampanoag tribe what was then known as Gay Head — and see the most magnificent light on the East Coast.”</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Richard Skidmore, keeper of Gay Head Light (Andrea Shea/WBUR)" loadg="lazy"/></picture></a><figptn class="article-fig-ptn">Richard Skidmore, keeper of Gay Head Light (Andrea Shea/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">Now the ferally regnized tribe is hopg to attract more tourists, and other islanrs, to the Gay Head Light and the other s along the perimeter of a ad-end drive known as Aqunah Circle.</p><p class="">That's why they formed a planng group wh officials and rints of the town of Aqunah to apply for state regnn as a cultural district. There are <a href=">34 of the walkable zon Massachetts</a>, cludg one other on the Veyard. The districts receive grant money and support to elevate their stori, brg more visors, and spur enomic velopment.</p><p class="">The Aqunah Cultural Center is playg a big part the storytellg effort. It’s right across the circle om the Gay Head Light and is the former homtead of Edw Devri Vanrhoop, the first Wampanoag to s the Legislature. (There's a long le of Vanrhoops the Wampanoag tribe.)</p><p class=""><strong>A Project To 'Break Down Barriers'</strong></p><p class="">Program director Lda Coombs says she hop the new cultural district will help clarify a few monly held misperceptns.</p><p class="nt-medium">“People ask all the time, ‘So how far back do your Indian herage go?’ And we look at them and say, ‘Um, all the way,' " she says.</p><p class="">Coombs explas that Aqunah was one of the 69 origal villag of the Wampanoag Natn on the Veyard. When the English arrived the 1600s they phed the tribe to the very end of the island. Its members stggled to survive the dislotn om their anctral home. They ntracted foreign, sometim adly, European diseas.</p><p class="">Today the tribal members are dited to prervg their legacy, land, language and culture.</p><p class="">Tobias Vanrhoop, chairman of the Wampanoag Tribal Council, believ the new cultural district will help. “Hopefully this project n break down barriers and we n get that story out there,” he says.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Tobias Vanrhoop is the chairman of the Wampanoag Tribal Council. (Andrea Shea/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">Apparently the project is also breakg down barriers between the tribe and the town.</p><p class="">The two groups have been buttg heads over the Aqunah Wampanoag’s <a href=">efforts to build a so</a> on Martha’s Veyard. Everyone I spoke to for this story said this new cultural district reprents one of the first tim the town and tribe have been able to work together.</p><p class="">The novelty of this llaboratn is not lost on Ana Walker<strong>,</strong> executive director of the Massachetts Cultural Council, the state agency that granted the cultural district signatn.</p><p class="">Walker is clearly proud to share one more first. “We are so exced that we now Massachetts have the very first the untry cultural district that is a jot project of a town and a tribe,” she says.</p><p class="">Walker said everyone need to be on-board orr for the state to grant cultural district stat. Both the town and the tribe passed rolutns of support.</p><p class="">Aqunah Town Admistrator Adam Wilson says now the two enti will work together to map out a urse for the area's future, which clus fundraisg.</p><p class="nt-medium">“There’s actually two ernments the ltle town of Aqunah,” he says, “wh 400 year-round rints.”</p><p class=""><strong>'We’re Still In The Place That We Belong'</strong></p><p class="">Lol bookbr Mzi Pratt has lived Aqunah for more than 30 years and is part of the new district’s planng team. She was also stmental the <a href=">efforts to move Gay Head Light</a> and the renovatn of the Vanrhoop homtead.</p><p class="">For her the Wampanoag bs, historil s and betiful bluffs at the end of the island are the town’s “enomic and spirual re.” Last year Pratt says that source of energy was pleted when two of the storeonts went vant. “I’m very glad that didn’t ntue for another season,” she says.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Berta Welch is owner of the Stony Creek Gift Shop, which origally opened 75 years ago. (Andrea Shea/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">Tribal member Berta Welch rells the drop the number of tourist b a few years back.</p><p class="nt-medium">“It was like a ghost town up here,” she says.</p><p class="">That's one reason why Welch got volved the cultural district effort. She sells wd chim, Wampum jewelry and other crafts at the Stony Creek Gift Shop on the cliffs. Her mother opened the store 75 years ago. Welch has worked here her whole life and is enthiastic about the tribe-town llaboratn.</p><p class="">She’s been on the zong and planng boards for the town of Aqunah for 30 years, is print of the Aqunah Cultural Center (among other posts) and acknowledg gettg everyone to see eye-to-eye hasn’t always been easy.</p><p class="nt-medium">“The town and the tribe have not had a lot of experience dog that together. So was an exercise,” she says. “We want to be protective of our culture, too. It’s not about merchandisg . Explog . And although I don't thk that was really a stggle, I jt thk 's somethg that need to be ironed out.”</p><p class="">There will be plenty more for the planng team to agree on, cludg improved signage, walkways, landspg, programmg and marketg.</p><p class="">In the end Tobias Vanrhoop predicts 'll all be worth .</p><p class="nt-medium">“At tim people have an ia of what native people should be…or what we are…or that maybe we fad away,” he says. “But all people belong to a place. For our people we’re still the place that we belong. The Indians’ home of Aqunah beme known to the English as Gay Head, after the cliffs that rose 100 feet above the ocean. Wrote historian John Warner Barber 1841, “to those who are on board a vsel sailg near to shore, pecially after a ra, and when the sun sh on , is a betiful and brilliant object, hence the name Gay Head.
