As the Lord Mayor and others addrsed the multu (a hundred souls or so), Gay sat quietly on the chair provid, and chatted amiably wh those around him. As soon as Gay was ont of , he seemed to lose the pallor that had been evint when he arrived. That was followed by a small receptn the pub across the road, but Gay had slipped quietly away.

”Born Dubl, Gay (Gabriel) was the youngt of the four sons and one dghter of Edward Byrne and his wife Annie (nee Carroll). His father worked for the Guns brewery and Gay attend the Christian Brothers school at Synge Street.

To Ireland he was simply Gaybo, or even Uncle Gaybo. In his long and prolific life, Gay Byrne mt have had very ltle regrets.
