“Look at the Stocka Tavern Kgston and Brasserie 292 and Bull & Buddha Poughkeepsie — none of them are gay-owned, but they are embracg of everyone. Prr to the openg of the Out Bar (“more of a lounge, ls of a dance place, ” says Decker), the only other gay bars were “up Albany, down Wtchter, and of urse New York Cy. ’ I thought we had a clean break, but then I found out that he told everybody the school that I was gay.
“I had barely known that I was gay myself when I told my iend and I felt like I uld tst him. It seems that harassg gay and lbian stunts is the last okay thg to do, ” says Rob Conlon, a chair of GLSEN Hudson Valley (the Gay, Lbian and Straight Edutn Network). Acrdg to a recent survey by GLSEN, ne out of 10 gay, lbian, and bisexual stunts are bullied school, and they are four tim more likely than heterosexuals to attempt suici.
And the supportive environment that GLSEN helped foster by trag staff the Spackenkill School District may have helped lead to a succs story for Tyler, who helped create one of the regn’s first Gay-Straight Allianc (GSA) at the middle-school level. He says that at each weekly meetg there are probably about 10 stunts — “a mixture of gay and straight, and some who are jt wonrg where they belong. “We’ve done lobbyg for gay marriage and now we are tryg to lobby for the Genr Act, ” says Suraci.
