WHY HSEY GAY BELL?
The Ribble Group ed a stir 1959 when the first 'Gay Hosts' Weymann bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 MCK 812 entered service and beme the first PSV to jo the M1 on the Luton stretch the day that the first part of the M1 opened- 2nd November 1959. Ribble seen that wh the openg of both the Prton Bypass (M6) 1958 and the M1 a year later that for the first time ach uld pete agast other forms of transport, due to no upper speed lim on motorways. Ribble wanted to rry more passengers than a 30ft sgle ck ach uld rry and offer luxury that had never been seen on ach. The Gay Hosts Weymann Atlantean double ck ach featured 50 armchair type Chapman seats CH34/16FT, at the rear of the lower ck was a toilet and servery un. Luggage was stored over the ont near-si wheel arch, unr the stairs and at the rear of the lower ck. The Atlantean was powered by the larger 0.680 enge producg 150bhp and drivg through a semi tomatic gearbox, air spensn was fted on the ont axle. The fe ach uld cise at 64mph, the air spensn was later removed and replaced wh leaf spensn. The name Gay Hosts meant happy hosts, as each vehicle would rry a hosts or steward who would serve food, drks and cigarett durg the journey, Ribble wanted to give the airle feelg to the Gay Hosts. 36 productn Gay Hosts Atlanteans entered service between 1960 and 1961 and alloted to the Ribble and Stanrwick fleet, four even entered service wh Sut, all 37 were later transferred to Stanrwick. Wh the arrival of the VRLs rulted the Gay Hosts been whdrawn and sold. My photograph shows the 36th Gay Hosts VFR 378 at Victoria Coach Statn 1967, havg jt arrived on the Kwick London service. The were sent down to Weymann's at Addltone for fishg as Stanrwick 'Gay Hosts' ach. Weymann bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 SFV 421 was origally numbered 25 the Stanrwick fleet, beg one of the famo 'Gay Hosts' class of Atlantean ach operated by Ribble, Stanrwick & Sut.
Ci 1:50 sle Leyland Atlantean, Ribble/Stanrwick 'Gay Hosts' double-cker ach offerg 'Silent Speedy Safe Travel'. Wh Air Spensn, Reclg Seats, Rehments (prumably served by the Gay Hosts... Christened 'Gay Hosts', the ach were a mon sight on the M6 and the M1 the 1960s.

The 'Gay Hosts' operated to London's Victoria Coach Statn, and stood out om all the other operator's vehicl - their applitn of the cream and maroon red was refully applied, to give a ach of distctn. Only one 'Gay Hosts' is prervatn. This was the pneer 'Gay Hosts' ach, Ribble number 1251 built November 1959, and was ptured early s reer parked Tmpet Street, close to Lower Mosley Street b statn which was Manchter's prcipal ach term om 1930 until s closure 1973.
Ribble's 'Gay Hosts' ncept was imagative and a radil step forward.
Brand as ‘Gay Hosts’, the ach-seated vehicl ught the popular imagatn, wh at-seat servic of drks, snacks and even light meals. The Edor of Mecno Magaze seemed imprsed too, although I have heard that the buckg and pchg of the Gay Hosts ach at speed ma drkg the ffee whout spillg a tricky bs. The "Gay Hosts" service ran the 1960's between London & Manchter.
