The articulatn of gay inti, as argued by Ho, is also highly sensive to class narrativ, particular the hegemonic disurse of suzhi (qualy) Che society.
She was a rearcher om Atralia, a cizen of Hong Kong, an overseas Che, and a non-gay female. As an outsir at many levels — cultural, lguistic, sexual, and geographil — Ho provis a rich and hont scriptn of the tensn and challeng she enuntered lol lbian and gay muni.

Gay and lbian subculture urban Cha by Loretta Wg Wah Ho, 2009, Routledge edn, English * gay and lesbian subculture in urban china *
The Gay Space Che Cyberspace: Self-Censorship, Commercialisatn and Misreprentatn. Gay and Lbian Subculture Urban Cha. The domant mol for unrstandg ntemporary gay and lbian inti has always been drawn om the theorizatn of Wtern queer cultur and muni.
It is only recently that the Wtern (sometim read “global”) notn of “gayns” has been qutned, cricized or even centred, and this has occurred maly along the l of a crique of cultural imperialism and exemplified by the notn of “global queerg. ” Recent studi have drawn out the discrepanci between morn and tradnal reprentatns of non-Wtern, non-normative genrs and sexuali, brgg forth the rensiratn of what is meant by “gay” or “lbian” and re-examg appropriate gay and lbian polics that are sensive to lol and global parameters. The aim of the book is to exame the emergence of ntemporary Che same-sex inti—gay, lbian, lala, l, money boy, tongzhi, duan bei—unr Cha’s openg up to globalizatn.
GAY AND LBIAN SUBCULTURE URBAN CHA
Gay and lbian subculture urban Cha by Loretta Wg Wah Ho, Jul 03, 2011, Routledge edn, paperback * gay and lesbian subculture in urban china *
Ho articulat four major trends Che same-sex inti urban Cha: an creasgly globalized gay culture; an ongog nstctn of “digeno” Che inty that unteracts globalized gay culture; a hybridized transnatnal Che inty; and the emergence of a gay space Che cyberspace. G., Lisa Rofel, Tom Boellstorff, Mart Manalansan, Denis Altman, Chris Berry) discsg globalizatn and inti non-Wtern non-normative genrs and sexuali, Ho asks the qutn: “How have Wtern notns of gay and lbian inty been appropriated non-Wtern societi as a rult of creasg global ternnectedns? She rejects both the simple logics that Che same-sex inti are merely pyts of Wtern gay and lbian inti and liftyl, on the one hand, and that “digeno” Che same-sex inti as beg “thentic, ” on the other.
Rather, she argu succctly that Che gay men and lbians “selectively (re-)appropriate patterns of gayns through a Wtern mol of morny, whilst still ntug to fend an ‘thentic’ Che same-sex inty and sense of belongg” (21), leadg to her overall paradoxil argument of Che same-sex inty: “open and centred, yet at the same time, natnal and nformg to state ntrol” (138). Ho’s book is important and timely as brgs together (homo) sexualy and globalizatn the Che ntext and offers a strong crique to the hegemonic (Wtern) notn of gayns. She is particularly sensive to her own role as “a semi-outsir, a non-gay female, a rearcher om Atralia, a cizen of Hong Kong, a visg scholar of the Che Amy of Social Scienc Beijg, and a non-Beijg rint the field” (60) who has done rearch on gays and lbians urban Cha.
Chapter 4 is a rather short chapter on the polics of same-sex articulatns through the divergent meangs of “homosexual, ” “gay” and “lbian” the Che ntext, g a lguistic analysis. In chapter 5, she turns to the creasgly mercialized and state-ntrolled Che gay cyberworld.

Buildg om the prev chapters, chapter 6 is the most important and tertg chapter, as Ho puts forward her ma argument that the emergence of morn Che same-sex inti nnot merely be treated as “morn” (read Wtern) or “thentic” (read digeno), but are nstuted by a plited terplay between lol g-to-terms gay and lbian generatns, Cha’s project of morny, and global queerg.

Sendly, I would like to hear more the different voic among the gay and lbian muni, as the domant voice prented here was that of highly ted, cy-based, male profsnals (maly due to the sample of terviewe). She argu that the nfluence of a heightened sense of natnalism and the domant, yet often agmentary, notns of Wtern gayns has led to a paradoxil articulatn of the Che same-sex inty urban Cha, that is, "open and centered, but at the same time, natnal and nformg to state ntrol" (p.
