the troductn of variabl for variatns of sex characteristics and sexual orientatn.</p><p>This product prents statistil standards for four variabl:</p><ul><li>Sex</li><li>Genr</li><li>Variatns of sex characteristics</li><li>Sexual orientatn. </li></ul><p>The 2020 Standard scrib the four variabl and their associated nceptual issu and fns. The standard for each variable clus the ncept(s), fn(s), qutnnaire modul, classifitn, dg stcture, and output tegori to be ed ABS terviewer-based and self-enumerated llectns. Acrdgly, the amount of ntent available for any topic is limed and is tailored to the output requirements and analysis the survey is tend to support. Therefore, each survey may clu one or more of the variabl on a se by se basis.</p><p>Although ially a small number of ABS surveys will clu a qutn for all four variabl, and this will grow over time, the key driver for the standard is to ensure that all survey participants n answer the qutns a way that accurately scrib their suatn. Sex rerd at birth refers to what was termed by sex characteristics observed at birth or fancy</li><li>Genr is about social and cultural differenc inty, exprsn and experience. This is discsed further the Genr variable.</li></ul><p>While they are two related ncepts, utn should be exercised when parg unts for sex wh those for genr. Ctn should also be exercised when parg unts for sex rerd at birth and the sex of a person at the time of pletg a survey, as a person's reported sex may change over the urse of their lifetime.</p><p>As the terms sex and genr are often ed terchangeably, a rponnt might provi a genr rponse to a sex qutn. The sex rerd at birth qutn may rce the number of genr rpons to a sex qutn. Incln of a specific genr qutn may also improve accuracy of reportg agast a sex qutn. Many variatns of sex characteristics are not evint at birth, and people may not be aware they were born wh a variatn of sex characteristics until puberty or later life. The cln of born wh a variatn of sex characteristics or tersex as a rponse optn a sex qutn, alongsi male and female, is not pable of generatg reliable or nsistent rults measurg this populatn, and perpetuat the misnceptn that tersex people are neher male nor female. </p><p>For surveys where a unt of people born wh variatns of sex characteristics is required, a separate qutn is necsary.
