"Around three years ago, I was workg on the layout of a book about physique photography wh photos om the 1950s, whose athetics and visual worlds were clearly tend to appeal to a gay dience.
In the urse of this work, I asked myself: what would a book wh ntemporary gay and queer photography look like? "Around that time, I beme aware of the works of Matt Lambert and Florian Hetz, and I started to look for other gay and queer photographers. After the Nazis officially seized power 1933, they started forcefully imposg their polics acrdg to which not only racially and polilly targeted groups were not sirable, but gay people as well. Although homosexualy was crimalized by the disgraceful Paragraph 175, the people were not prosecuted pecially durg the Weimar era, but 1935 the Nazis extend this paragraph and thgs beme much worse than earlier.
Many fled Germany due to creasg homophobia imposed om the state, and among them were many talented artists and photographers. The prolific figure who was openly gay and Jewish, and therefore had to leave the untry (and return the midst of war) was Herbert List, known for his highly sophistited and slightly myster athetic fluenced by Surrealism and Metaphysil patg.
