And so we very quickly do to each other.” </p><p>Ahn seems to have an abily to extract that kd of vulnerabily om his performers a way that is both culturally specific but universally appealg. Early the film, Noah, the film’s Lizzie Bent, walks wh his iends toward the Fire Island P home owned by Er (Margaret Cho) where they stay every summer. The group discs the hard choice between prervg their digny and havg sex wh horrible people who probably don’t like them anyways. Booster has long scribed himself as sensive growg up, and Ahn turn is a “sucker for vulnerabily,” so was easy for the pair to llaborate. </p><p>In one of the first meetgs Ahn and Booster had, Booster tearfully opened up about his datg life, which ma an imprsn on the director. “I thk that that vulnerabily for me was so powerful and betiful to wns jt between , and I immediately knew that this was somethg that I uld nnect to, like, here’s a vulnerable soul,” Ahn says. “I’m really drawn to that, bee I thk that’s my M.O. as well. And I also knew that would be really powerful the film: this is a character who is nstantly tryg to protect himself. It was fortg for me to llaborate wh someone who unrstands the necsy and the value of openg up.”</p><p>Booster and Bowen Yang (the film’s Jane) are a brilage of cracked armor and sensivy, their real-life iendship rentextualized for the pathos of film. Ahn ptur small gtur between the two of them, like looks and glanc, but also a recurrg fger tap, drawn om real life, that doubl as an exprsn of ep love. “They had such a hard time dog that on mera,” Ahn lghs. It's jt one of many moments of gay movement that perva the movie, an attentn to exprsivens shaped by Ahn’s admiratn for the German dancer and choreographer Pa Bsch.</p><p>“Fally, I get this opportuny where I n portray gay movement,” the director tells me excedly. “I remember we were talkg about stunt doubl for the var pratfalls, like Bowen gog down the steps for that meet-cute moment wh Charlie (Jam Scully). And I remember talkg to the stunt guy sayg, ‘I kd of don’t know how else to say this, but like, he really needs to fall like a gay person.’ Ultimately, Bowen did his own stunts!” </p><p>Ahn wanted to ensure a fortable environment which gay gtur and exprsivens would reveal themselv naturally on mera, whout havg to “filter or portray anybody else bis who they are when they go to Fire Island.” Some of this volved some fun sense memory work: “It’s like: <em>You’re on the island, you’re on the island, what is the feelg of beg on the island? I want to ntue explorg that.” </p></div></asi><p>Ahn to Fire Island, the real-life place, as somewhat of an outsir, feelg an attractn to the “age of the place: the planks of wood, so worn and weathered, the buildgs, the boardwalks.” That the gay mec is overwhelmgly whe was, for Ahn, both a challenge and a project. “Even this kd of space, the story of the film and Joel’s perspective [asks],
