book </span><em><a href=" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">The 2000s Ma me Gay</a><span>, </span></em><span>as well as terviewg s thor, the sayist and humor wrer Grace Perry. (I’m hopg to do more terviews for the newsletter gog forward). Wh s first pag, I felt a wave of btersweet nostalgia about the cultural touchston vers that align exactly wh my age group: </span><em>Mean Girls, </em><span>Harry Potter, MTV culture, “girl power,” </span><em>The O.C., </em><span>sadboys, </span><em>Glee</em><span>, and more. </span></p><p><span>“Sharg a mon set of referenc and jok and theori about a show or book or film seri is the entire pot of fandom,” she wr late the book. “Whenever someone mak a ep-cut 30 Rock reference, I perk up and feel stantly nnected to them, as though watchg Ta Fey’s semal s fifty tim over means we are, on some level, the same.” That’s how  I felt throughout much of </span><em>The 2000s Ma Me Gay. </em></p><p>The book is also, te to s tle, about Perry’s own experience wh g out and owng her queer inty, spe the often homophobic nature of such media, as well as her Catholic school upbrgg that had tsted teachers tellg her “homosexualy is like alholism.” The book’s media analysis terspers wh memoir, turns hilar and heartbreakg. </p><p><span> As I’ve vered a lot this newsletter, the early ghts were an tertg time for televisn and reprentatn of LGBTQ and characters of lor on TV. Thgs were changg rapidly. When we were tweens, there were basilly no gay characters on TV, pecially TV targeted to kids and teens. Yet by the time we were llege, shows like </span><em>Glee </em><span>and </span><em>Pretty Ltle Liars</em><span> had ma major stris showg LGBTQ characters. Now, wh seri like </span><em><a href=" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">Sex Edutn</a><span>, Euphoria, </span></em><span>and untls more, we’ve seen gayns more normalized and celebrated on TV than ever, though there are still shortgs. And reprentatn and of self has s lims. When done poorly, or executed by the wrong hands, n sometim do more harm than good. </span></p><p>In our nversatn, Perry and I talked about how TV and pop culture is more than jt pism, the “I Kissed a Girl” era of lbian reprentatn, “girl power,” the virgy nstct, and how even the bt reprentatn often stops short of addrsg stctural and class issu. I wrote a versn of that say 2018, as like a ten year retrospective on “I Kissed a Girl.” That didn’t end up nng anywhere, but I was like, oh, dog this blend of memoir and pop culture cr is somethg I should apply to a bunch of different piec of entertament or media or pop culture that I nsumed when I was a teenager. So I jt kd of started brastormg , and was like, oh yeah, I have a lot to say about </span><em>The O.C. </em><span>and my personaly, and a lot to say about Harry Potter.</span></p><p>I'm not terted retroactively applyg our prent-day social jtice standards to movi and TV shows that me out 20 years ago, bee obvly they're not gog to hold up. That’s not an tertg thg to say. The more tertg procs for me is gog back, and stead of jt beg like lol, this is offensive, ’s more beg like, sure, ’s offensive, but how did those offensive ias, how did the msagg of really stick to my bon, and what did I take om as a kid? And then more importantly, what has still affected me today the way that I see genr, sexualy, and g out? I thk ’s really hard to shake the ias about the world that we velop when we're teenagers. You kd of jt take them for granted as the way that the world is. But there's this one scene where Kima is out at a gay bar wh her girliend and a uple of their iends, and one of them asks her why she cid to bee a p, and Kima gets this whole monologue about helpg people, and meanwhile they're dog dg raids and beatg the sh out of people. </span><em>The Wire </em><span>do not have a glamoro view of what beg a p is at all. It’s very cril of police. But this whole scene at the gay bar wh Kima givg this heroic speech about beg a p, and her iends are like, “that’s so amazg.” And I’m like, okay, maybe the tim were a ltle different. But this group of all gay people beg like, “we famoly and historilly love ps.” And ’s like, no...</span></p><p><strong>There’s kd of this abily or refal to ntend more eply wh stctural issu.</strong></p><p>Yeah, I also thk that there’s a thg of people not wantg to wre characters who are quote-on-quote stereotyp. So if you have a gay character, [an exec on a show] might not want to make them super effemate. They’d be like, “no, we're gog to ph agast that negative gay stereotype and make him mascule, like you wouldn’t even know that he's gay.” And I n see how the head of a work who’s not gay, might thk, “we’re breakg stereotyp about what beg gay is, and we’re showg all kds of ways to experience sexualy.”</p><p>But really what you’re dog there is makg that character nform to the more normative kd of group. You're makg them more mascule, or more wealthy, or not polil any way. And I n see how somebody their head uld thk that’s the right thg to do when really ’s erasg so much.</p><p><strong>Yeah, an effort to undo stereotyp there’s erasure gog on. I jt was rereadg the part your book on Adam Pally’s character, Max, </strong><em><strong>Happy Endgs, </strong></em><strong>which is dog that same thg.
