He is a godfather of the MTV era, havg pneered the morn mic-vio genre. (His <em>Elephant Parts,</em> a llectn of edy and mil shorts, won the very first Grammy for vio of the year 1982.) He was also the executive producer of the 1984 punk edy <em>Repo Man</em>, one of the bt Amerin movi of the Reagan era. Before that, he was a foundatnal figure the Lrel Canyon untry-rock scene, havg hand <strong>Lda Ronstadt</strong> one of her first h sgl wh his song “Different Dm.” Oh, and he happened to play the guar-pickg wiseacre wh a Texas drawl and ski p the <em>The Monkee</em>s televisn seri, a massive succs that aired om 1966 to 1968. I say “happened to play,” bee when you hear Nmh, who is 78 and one of two survivg Monke, talk, you get the imprsn that he se himself ls as a member of an enormoly popular band than as an actor on a TV show lled <em>The Monke</em>.</p><p>The implitn, as ever, is that the Monke aren’t—and were never—que real.</p><p class="paywall">In their heyday, they were famoly the “Prefab Four”—a bubblegum fantasy dreamed up by a uple of young Hollywood htlers named <strong>Bob Rafelson</strong> and Bert Schneir. The two of them ught the Beatl Richard Lter’s <em>A Hard Day’s Night</em> and had the kd of ia that mak people the entertament dtry very rich: They would take <em>A Hard Day’s Night</em>, set L.A., st four hungry actor-micians, christen them the Monke, and turn them to a huge, huge band. It was synergy before synergy was a thg, a totalized visn of media saturatn: The seri, their daydream imaggs, would be the h at the hub of a Monke anchise, spawng ln-sellg rerds, arena tours, and merchandisg galore. Rad listeners would bee TV watchers, TV watchers would buy rerds…around and around and around would go.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="uiu3d"></div></div><p class="paywall">As turned out, Rafelson and Schneir had gotten precisely right: That is jt what went down. Now, 55 years after the seri premiered, Nmh and <strong>Micky Dolenz,</strong> the Monke’ dmmer and lead volist, are headg back on the road a tour billed as a farewell. The dat beg September 10, Spokane, Washgton, wd around the untry (wh a stop at New York’s Town Hall on October 24), and fish November 14 at the Greek Theatre Los Angel. As a victory lap, ’s btersweet, g the wake of COVID and followg the aths recent years of fellow members Davy Jon and Peter Tork. It’s also an ditn, if anyone r about the semantics anymore, that the Monke are, fact, very much <em>real</em>, no matter what Nmh or Dolenz may thk—a talented and origal band, a pop-culture force, a touchstone for multiple generatns, a lastg fluence, and even today, a viable mody. Nmh’s vast résumé alone practilly prov the pot.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">It began September of 1965, when 437 hopefuls rpond to ads <em>The Hollywood Reporter</em> and <em>Daily Variety</em> to try out for one of the four rol a new TV seri for NBC. Among them were <strong>Stephen Stills, Pl Williams,</strong> and Harry Nilsson—but not, <a href=">as the urban legend go</a>, Charlie Manson. Stills was dged, but his roommate, Tork, a Greenwich Village folkie type, got a part. A year later, the Monke—the seri and the group—beme a sensatn. The first season of <em>The Monke</em> won two Emmys. In 1967, four Monke albums land at number one on the Billboard chart one year—a feat that might never be duplited. (The Beatl me close, wh three top LPs three separate years.) Hs like “Last Tra to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” and “Daydream Believer” clogged the rad airwav—unniable earworms, every one.</p><p class="paywall">And then somethg funny happened on the way to teenybopper fame and ignomy. In s send season, <em>The Monke</em> swerved to the avant-gar, hostg such unimpeachably credible guts as Frank Zappa and Tim Buckley. <strong>Howard Kaylan</strong> of the Turtl and Mothers of Inventn gazed upon the show and <a href=">profsed</a>, “I loved .” While <em>The Monke</em> beamed to lns of Amerin livg rooms week after week (and would later enjoy a robt life synditn), the var Monke themselv were often found the pany of their exalted peers. Some were weled by the Beatl (Nmh was a hoe gut of John Lennon’s) and some members were seen <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">hobnobbg</a> at Monterey Pop. Later, Crosby, Stills, and Nash would nduct rehearsals at Tork’s hoe Stud Cy before they signed wh Atlantic Rerds. The Tork lair was also where the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Ston rehearsed</a> for their 1969 Amerin tour, wh s fateful stop at Altamont.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">When the Monke cid was time to implo, havg grown tired of the teen-idol game as the unterculture took hold, they did high style, wh a movie that n be bt scribed as totally batsh: the surreal 1968 cult film <em>Head</em>, wrten by <strong>Jack Nicholson.</strong> Dennis Hopper ma a meo, seemg to beg Rafelson for velopment money, a b of borrle cema veré. That year, Rafelson and Schneir eed up the funds that allowed Hopper and Peter Fonda to make <em>Easy Rir</em>, a film that arguably rearranged the landspe of Hollywood. In other words, cema’s endurg symbol of the 1960s—the movie that phed Hollywood to the of Srse, Coppola, and Bogdanovich—was ma wh Monke money.</p><p class="paywall">The mic? Well, was bubblegum— the bt way. Tth be told, the micians who joed the Monke on their first two albums were L.A. ssn-player superstars who uld have blown most “real” ’60s bands off the stage. (Dolenz had bought the <a href=">third</a> Moog ever sold.)</p><p class="paywall">As Nmh noted his wry and wonrful 2017 memoir <em>Infe Tuday</em>, “What had started as a py of the 1960s beme a fact of the 1960s.” In the 21st century, there have been rewardg Monke tours and a well-received album, 2016, produced part by the late popsmh Adam Schlger.
