I remember when travelg to Brazil, I was told that Jiu-Jsu ‘Pboys’ would beat up gays and transvt, bee they were ‘disgtg’ (I’ll spare you the words).

I'm Gay and do BJJ. I am gay, a mted monogamo relatnship wh another man, and have been practisg brazilian jiujsu at a lol gym for jt over two years now (not too far off blue belt, if I traed more regularly, maybe I'd already have one, who knows). On other webs dited to jiujsu and grapplg arts, there is fely a noted stigma agast homosexual mal practisg jiujsu on the basis that eher they're dog for sexual reasons and tryg to "get off" om , or the basis that if a gay man rolls wh them class, they'll all sudnly ntract HIV.
It's rare to hear a nversatn about gay people om the people the gym, but sometim DOES happen, and mak me very glad that I have kept my classmat the dark about my sexualy (I am very much "out" every other aspect of my life). If you knew I was gay, and YOUR amy, would you roll wh me? I'm cur about the views based not jt on the strange fear of gay men rryg around fe STDs, but also potentially on the ia that a sgle gay man would be a "sexual threat").

BJJ people are que homophobic, as I have e to believe durg my 12-year volvement the sport, even if they don’t mean negatively and sultgly. People have said to me directly or to others that they feel gy about sharg their homosexualy Jiu Jsu circl, particularly after beg accepted as “one of the boys/girls” the locker room culture.
Of urse, geography and mographics play a role this, as some parts of the world are still strongly opposed to homosexualy Jiu Jsu and every other aspect of life. There have been exampl given by stunts where they’ve heard threats like “I’ll never let go of a submissn on a gay person” and even more gome stuff that I won’t re to repeat. The blame for open, or even worse, hidn homophobia Jiu Jsu gyms li strictly wh ach.
