The Memphis Gay and Lbian Communy Center (Now Out Memphis) began s "Gay Expo" 1990 and held a variety of Pri themed events for several years after. The Black Pri MovementIn 1991, a group of Black gay men and women Washgton, DC cid to take advantage of an annual Memorial Day weekend gatherg lled the “Children’s Hour”. Most of the Children’s Hour ftivi were held a Black gay equented bar lled the Club Hoe that was very popular om the 70’s to s closg the early 90’s.
Welmore Cook, Theodore Kirkland and Ernt Hopks, founrs of DC Black and Lbian Gay Pri Day as was lled 1991, wanted to ntue what had bee a tradn the Black LGBT muny buy addg an important nsiratn – they were gog to raise funds for anizatns who provid servic to Blacks/Ain Amerins affected by and fected wh HIV/AIDS, and dissemate important HIV/AIDS preventn rmatn to atten of the “Black Pri” event.
A r full of pneers who had seen many of the tought years of gay liberatn ro the lead om Overton Park to Peabody Park. Gay Veterans Jim Harrgton and Kijowski lead the Para as Grand Marshals and the 1995 bandana was seen everywhere. The Para was led by MAGY (Memphis Area Gay Youth) and attendance grew.
