Ang “Dmmie Zeb” Gaye, who has died sudnly aged 62, was a foundg member of Aswad, one of the most succsful Brish reggae groups. Gaye’s propulsive dmmg, which often rporated trite rolls peppered by strikg rhythmic accents and sometim unmon time signatur, helped give Aswad a distctive edge om their earlit begngs the mid-1970s.
Gaye’s vol skills and songwrg abily were also put to good e the group, which he began ontg the mid-90s.
However, even durg the early phase which the group strove to tablish themselv London’s burgeong reggae scene, Gaye’s sporadic stts on lead vols typilly yield exceptnal rults: the but sgle, Back to Ai (1976), wrten by the keyboardist Courtney Hemmgs, was sensively livered by Gaye at Hemmgs’ requt; It’s Not Our Wish (That We Should Fight) (1978), -wrten wh the bassist Gee Oban, and Judgement Day (1979), wrten by Gaye, gave voice to tratns experienced by young black Brish people durg a time of heightened racial tensn, while veneratg the Rastafari fah that gave solace to Gaye and his fellow band, the name meang black Arabic, origally prised the volist Brsley For, Oban, Hemmgs, the guarist Donald Griffhs and the keyboardist Tony “Gad” Robson, as well as the harmoni player Bunny McKenzie, though Robson was absent when the group nvced Island Rerds’ Richard Williams to sign them for their self-tled but 1976, the band beg too big to allow for two keyboardists.
