You n hear the mic, he tells me. “Those sounds, that mil DNA—the Bill Monroe, the Flatt & Scggs, the Stanley Brothers' mounta mic, the Carter Fay. It's the early '80s and the tersectn of punk and roots is where the actn is—X, the Blasters, a former East L.A. weddg band lled Los Lobos l Este ( Los Angel). “Cowpunk” isn't que Dwight's vibe, but sudnly there's a space the scene for the kd of hard-drivg tradnal mic he and his band are startg to make. They open up for Hüsker Dü and the Vlent Femm and the crowds get . “There was a visceral release for onstage,” Dwight says. “It's not genre- or idm-specific. Emotnal exprsn is what we had mon wh any dience we played ont of. Human begs rpond to that, pennt of genre. He tells a story about a Nashville rerd executive who me to see him open for Nick Lowe at the Hollywood Palace and sniffed, “It's awfully rock and roll”—this, about a set full of Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scggs vers. When he gets a rerd al wh Warner Rerds' newly reactivated Reprise imprt, he's technilly signg wh the label's Nashville divisn, but he views himself as answerable only to the Warner head office Burbank, where execs like Lenny Waronker have given unnventnal artists a long leash sce the mercially nowhere heydays of Randy Newman and Van Dyke Parks. Waronker brgs John Pre and Emmylou Harris to see the Roxy show, lls up Dwight the next day, and says, “None of my lleagu are ever gonna let me live this down if they fd out I'm tellg you this, but if anybody ever tells you to do anythg that go agast your stct or your tun, ever, here or any place this bs, don't do . Etc.</em> is sentially a rerelease of Yoakam's first EP pl four new songs, cludg the tle track, on which Dwight lists guars, Cadillacs, and “hillbilly mic” as “the only thgs that keep me hang' on.” When me time to release the song as a sgle, the label lled up Dwight's producer, askg if Dwight uld be persuad to recut whout the H-word. (They were iendly then, Yoakam says, and still are; they spent the summer of 2018 on the road wh Lucda Williams, on a bill they lled the LSD Tour.) Sharon Stone brought him as her date to the 1992 Amy Awards; Dwight wore leather pants. Yoakam acted his first movie 1993, holdg his own oppose Dennis Hopper and Nilas Cage John Dahl's die noir <em>Red Rock Wt.</em> That same year, his third rerd, <em>This Time,</em> went platum; 's still the biggt-sellg album he's ever ma. He says he never felt like he was on track to be a untry megastar—a Garth, an Alan Jackson, a Gee Stra, a Tim McGraw—and that this has always been okay wh him. Somethg else might have been possible, if he'd ma different cisns, but like the great Tom T. That range is pretty spectacular to vis.”</p><p>So are you an aspen, or are you bamboo?</p><p>“Oh, I don't know,” Dwight says, and lghs. “I n be bamboo.” Pse. “I'm probably jt danlns.
