Key was an enslaver and prosecuted abolnists as District Attorney for Washgton, D.C. And yet, he also volunteered his legal servic to ee those unjtly enslaved. Argug more than 100 such s (several all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court), Key’s efforts rulted the eedom of at least 189 people. Key is a nflicted figure, but one who had much mon wh the U.S. Constutn this era. Abolnists would have read the word “slave” as a provotn, specifilly a mockg reference to the Colonial Mar, who were heroic Black men who had ped slavery and joed the Brish fightg agast their former enslavers. In return, the Colonial Mar were promised eedom for themselv and their fai after the war. The Brish honored this promise.</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">For a majory of Whe Amerins at the time, however, Key’s lyrics seem not to have voked the natn’s “peculiar stutn” at all, but rather a patrtic sentiment gog back to the Amerin Revolutn, specifilly the refal of Amerins to be subjugated to the Brish kg. When Key’s lyrics were wrten 1814, Bra was not yet a parliamentary mocracy. Instead, the Brish people were subjects beholn to the dictat of a monarch. When Key wrote, “no refuge uld save the hirelg and slave,” he mocked the attackg Brish enemy, whose troops were paid mercenari (rather than the Amerin volunteers fightg agast them of their own ee will) and also royal subjects who owed fealty to their kg (and th uld not exercise such ee will at all).</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">While surprisg to today, the e of “slave” to mean “royal subject” was so mon early Amerin disurse that Key uld e the word a song celebratg the “land of the ee” whout any sense of irony.
